Gilas Pilipinas Preliminary Round Schedule in 2014 FIBA World Cup

They are too small sized. I've watched them play in the FIBA tourney, they will get eaten alive in Europe.
They are too small sized. I've watched them play in the FIBA tourney, they will get eaten alive in Europe.
We have a very tall front court. Our players height without shoes fajardo 6'10" (6'11.25" in shoes), Greg Slaughter 6'11 5/8" (7'1" in shoes), Marcus Douhit 6"9.5" (6'11" in shoes), Japeth Aguilar 6'8" (6'9.25" in shoes).
Jayson Castro Williams is 5'10" (5'11.25" in shoes)
I dont even recall seeing farjardo or slaughter play? I remembered the center was Douthit while the PF was Aguilar or Pingris/ De Ocampo (Who are way undersized at 6'5). Their guards are even smaller. They jack up too many threes, they play a run n gun game well but dont see their defense being too good. They can dominate weaker asia competition but Europe no.

Slaughter and Fajardo are the 2 best centers in the PBA right now.

I'm white but i'd wear the shit out of one of those blue jerseys. Flip on flippers.
The big game for them is against Senegal. They have no chance against the other teams but they should be able to beat Senegal if they play well.
Having one victory in the WC is a lot better then going winless.

Should? Should? Should be able to beat Senegal?
Do you EVER STOP?
Senegal has a very athletic team and they play hard, crash the boards, and play tough defense. It would be a colossal upset if they beat Senegal.
Of course it could happen, but to say they SHOULD beat Senegal is just yet another example of how insanely out of control your trolling is.
Senegal would have won the FIBA Americas tournament last summer.
Stop it. Just freaking STOP IT.

Philippines are a fast team, but their fastbreak offense will be negated by Senegal's athletic ability. The only guy I see with "black athleticism" would be Aguilar and maybe Alapag (a 5'9 guy who can dunk), but he's old.
Still, Senegal are the weakest team and it is the only probable team they have a chance of beating.

You under estimate the Gilas. They should beat Senegal if they play well. You're just lucky they are not in a group with weak a*%$ European teams like Ukraine or Finland who they should have been able to beat too.

There is no height depth
With Slaughter no out of the side there is just 3 players over 6'7''
Aguilar will have to play some mins at the SF spot as Norwood and/or Pingris lack the height at 6'5'' and 6'4'' respectively
Countries with players over 6'7'' in there group:
Puerto Rico - 6, Average Height 6'6''
Argentina - 8, Average Height 6'6''
Croatia - 8, Average Height 6'8''
Greece - 6, Average Height 6'8''
Senegal - 5, Average Height 6'5.5''
Hell ya my peepz (im Filipino) been waiting....hope we do well....
Also on a side note...PACQUIAO all the way son!!
April 12, 2014 Againts Timothy Bradley 2
someone needs to replace douthit .. he is still capable but dude is old already. he gave his all however... We dont need to recruit NBA players there are players out there that would be elite but wont be that expensive...

Hey lebron23 what is your team strength? Do you think they could surprise people?
Hey lebron23 what is your team strength? Do you think they could surprise people?
Ive played with many pinoy guys before. They are short but they are athletic, strong and fast. They make up their lack of height with their hustle. They have very quick hands and are good at stealing, and disrupt offenses with their fastbreaks. They also tend more to rely on outside shot (especially against those taller teams like Iran where the Philippines played 4 players outside the 3 point line)
They are also very passionate about bball its their national sport, if you have spare time you can watch this docu by nat geo on pinoy hoops:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEX9uub_6RM
As for surprising people, it will be tough as their group is a pretty strong one. They probably can beat Senegal (Though not a given as Senegal are still athletic and tall team). The rest of the teams I don't see beating but you'll never know in basketball especially in tournament matches. They might squeak in another upset.

They'll be heavy underdogs against Senegal. Most of Senegal's players play at a much higher level than the PBA and they're tough defensively. Gorgui Dieng will probably play for them this summer too which just adds to their length and shot blocking.
Puerto Rico, Greece, Croatia, and Argentina will almost definitely come out of the group.
The main problem with PR is that a team with length down low can beat them if their outside shot isnt falling.

True, they have a 7'1 center Greg Slaughter who would definitely boost their height depth but he rejected playing in Spain citing the reason that he did not play in FIBA Asia and thought that the spot should go to the original players who worked for it.
Again, getting Mcgee or Blatche would be a large IMPROVEMENT to their team, with much needed height at that spot..

Lee is good but there are others that are better is he suppose to be a replacement for alapag? Lee is not a better 3 point shooter than alapag but his midrange and penetration is deadly. I'd rather see marc baroca if alapag is to go away.
@Bandito - our strength is heart .. why? because even though as tgan mention we may lack height but he make up for it anyway we can.

Tenorio is underachieving this season. He's no longer a top 3 pg in the PBA Chot Reyes like Lee's game.

Hey Lebron23, just wondering why isn't Justin Melton in the smart gilas team? Is it because he's a rookie? He looks like a player and of course has crazy hops, he can come off the bench, he'll probably give fits to anyone guarding him.
They are only allowed one nationalized player.
As of now. Spain tries every year to change the rule. They petition FIBA every year with extremely hard legal cases. They are doing it again this year.
And USA always supports the idea also.
So it is never out of the question it might change to 2 players, because those 2 want it to be 2 players. Just like it used to be when USA first implemented that rule and had it for so many years.
Even though most countries I think hate even allowing even 1.

The USA supports the idea? Funny since they haven't used a nationalized player since Hakeem Olajuwan in 1996.
Anyway I hate it too. If too many nationalized players are allowed then national teams become no more than clubs teams and then what's the point?

Yes, USA supports it. They never wanted it to change from 2 to 1.

Hey euroleague, I really do believe that the philippines team will beat senegal (very good chance at least). This is not trolling. I think many guys overestimate the fiba african quality of play compared to fiba asia since there's the conception that they are black guys after all and bball is a black guy sport.
In fact, i've done some research and found out Egypt (Came in 2nd in Afrobasket) had lost both to Iran (1st in Fiba Asia) and South Korea (3rd in Fiba asia) in the 2013 jones cup.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_William_Jones_Cup
Results:
South Korea 80 - 63 Egypt
Iran 90 - 56 Egypt
Egypt's is about the same strength as Senegal, if they can't beat south korea they definitely can't beat Philippines.

Jordan Clarkson is really a Filipino and is set to be picked this year in the 2014 nba draft.. I wonder if he will embrace his Filipino roots.

jordan clarkson (missouri) drafted by the lakers (46th pick). he's half filipino and scrimmaged with the national team but i don't think he's eligible to play as a local anymore
