Proof that you can't believe ex-players or Wiki
FROM WIKI:

Another one of Price's distinguishing traits on the court was his pioneering of the splitting of the double team. As former teammate Steve Kerr explains, “Mark really revolutionized the way that people attack the screen and roll. To me, he was the first guy in the NBA who really split the screen and roll. A lot of teams started blitzing the pick and roll and jumping two guys at it to take the ball out of the hands of the point guard. He’d duck right between them and shoot that little runner in the lane. Nobody was doing that at that time. You watch an NBA game now and almost everybody does that. Mark was a pioneer in that regard."

pure poppycock, revisionist history - this is the kind of thing that guys say to the media in the moment, but it isn't true at all... they are just saying it because the reporter asked a certain question and kerr's a good, friendly guy, so he tells the reporter what he wants to hear and the conversation continues on a friendly note..
but in reality, jordan was splitting double teams as a rookie, better than price ever could... here he is using a higher level of navigation efficiency than anyone ever has (taking the most steps with the least dribbles) - how many guys take ZERO dribbles after the crossover to split the double, and they are at the rim dunking on someone?... how about no one... and jordan did this as a standard.

Re: Proof that you can't believe ex-players or Wiki
Good point OP.
It's why most people don't believe these stupid former players that say the game was better back in the day. We all know it is better now.
-
Re: Proof that you can't believe ex-players or Wiki
I think splitting doubles is something Price did regularly hence the confusion. To say he "created" it is obviously a stretch and classic hyperbole.
Nice gifs, by the way.

my point is that not only are kerr and wiki dead wrong, but the GIF above is how guys do it today - they take a ton of extra dribbles and have the worst navigation efficiency.
klay takes TWO extra dribbles after the double-team-splitting crossover, and he sneaks in an extra dribble before the crossover too - this demonstrates an inferior level of both skill and athleticism... this is a ditto for all of today's players... :confusedshrug:
taking my ball and going home now.. :( .. :D

but jordan did it all the time - it's nothing to find more:

Re: Proof that you can't believe ex-players or Wiki
Ive seen Earl Monroe split the double off a screen with a behind the back through the legs move. Nobody we could find invented anything. Price made it fairly well known. Like Marburys running back style gather step. Im sure people did it earlier...but he made it well known.

funny how Price gets credit for it, but MJ and others did it so much better before he ever did it... :facepalm
just like Elgin Baylor made the Elgin-Step a common move, but euros get credit instead, and it's called a eurostep... :facepalm
btw, here's another behind the back split of the double... he gets to the rim with only one dribble after the crossover to split the double (it's usually zero dribbles) - again, this is the highest level of navigation efficiency and represents the goat combination of skill/athleticism.

Mikan 60 years ago. Dirk will always be credited with the one foot fadeaway. Its no slight to Mikan. Dirk made it well known...a big part of his game.
Not like Kareem created the hook...or even his version. Guys were shooting picture perfect sky hooks in the 40s. Dolph Schayes had a mean one in the 50s. Pettit too....though he said he retired it when Bill Russell caught it.
You cant keep getting annoyed with such things. You would never have a moment of peace. Its....endless.

kareem has never been credited with inventing or popularizing the skyhook.
the skyhook was a very common move before kareem ever used it... there are tons of white dudes in the 50's where all they shot was skyhooks.
the move sort of died out though, and kareem was the only one left using it.

Re: Proof that you can't believe ex-players or Wiki

in the GIF below, look specifically at horace grant under the rim - the rules in previous eras didn't require horace to stay within armslength of his man, so he decides to stop under the rim and camp in the paint, instead of following his man toni kukocs out to the 3-point line in the far corner - this allows Horace to get there AHEAD OF TIME to block MJ, but MJ dunks on him anyway...

otoh, look specifically at harrison barnes near the far corner below - durant must stay within armslength of barnes to remain in the paint - so durant goes towards the edge of the paint to stay within "armslength", and consequently, he's late coming over.

everything I've seen this guy write is banal. and it never stops.
Just like this trashy show, using a clip of jordan breaking the rules as a display of greatness.... when what it really does is belittle Jordan a little more. Every example he uses is just.... bad.
Then he goes off on those endless rants about defense rule changes.
Like he has made a blinding discovery on the level of Newton or Einstein.... that no one else in all of history ever knew or could have ever figured out except through the brilliance and guiding hand of 8ball.

he didn't travel on the in GIF above - even though he doesn't take any more dribbles after the crossover and still gets all the way to the rim (which is why it's a great play), he uses a UNIQUE hop-step (where he sneaks a step in there right before the jumpstop) that keeps his footwork in sync - he's the only player to use this move.
on the other double-team splits, shown again below, he doesn't do the hop-step, but still has the right footwork to get all the way to the rim without taking another dribble and without travelling - taking the most steps with the least dribbles is goat navigation efficiency, and a represents a goat combination of skill and athleticism.

1. Klay Thompson's gif is completely different from any of the others. He has to take more dribbles to get around Adams and make sure Ibaka doesn't reach in and steal it.
2. Westbrooks pick and roll is above the 3 point line, Jordan's is below the 3 point line.
3. Jordan is more athletic than these players so of course he is able to take make more athletic plays. However being athletic doesn't automatically make you better or otherwise someone like StrowShow would be one of the GOATs.

you have to be athletic AND SKILLED to reach the basket with less dribbles and you must have goat skill to do the Jordan hop-step shown in previous GIFs.
and jordan wasn't just athletic - he's the one-and-only GOAT (there is only ONE goat btw).. whereas today's players enjoy the benefits of spacing... jordan never played with spacing, yet his stats are still GOAT.
