66-67 When Wilt Finally Had a Roster that Equaled Russell's
I have long mainatined that in the '66-67 season, Wilt finally had a roster that EQUALED Russell's.
How about these interesting numbers from the '66-67 EDF's, which was a Philly 4-1 series blowout win...
Philly outscored Boston, per game, in that series, by a 121.2 ppg to 111.2 ppg margin... or +10.0 ppg.
Remove the Wilt-Russell match-up, and Boston held a 101.0 ppg to 99.4 ppg margin... or a -1.6 deficit margin for Philly.
Wilt outscored Russell, per game, by a 21.6 ppg to 10.2 ppg margin... or +11.4 ppg.
Philly outrebounded Boston, per game, by a 67.8 rpg to 60.8 rpg margin... or +7.0 rpg.
Without the Wilt-Russell match-up, and Boston held a 37.4 rpg to 35.8 rpg margin... or a -1.6 rpg deficit margin for Philly.
Wilt outrebounded Russell, per game, by a 32.0 rpg to 23.4 rpg margin... or +9.6 rpg.
Philly outassisted Boston, per game, by a 25.4 apg to 24.4 apg margin... or +1.0 apg.
Without the Wilt-Russell H2H's...Boston held a 18.4 rpg to 15.4 apg margin... or a -3.0 apg deficit margin for Philly.
Wilt outassisted Russell, per game, by a 10.0 apg to 6.0 apg margin... or +4.0 apg.
Philly outshot Boston from the field in that series by a .448 to .403 FG% margin... or +.045.
Without the Wilt-Russell match-up, Philly outshot Boston by a .431 to .408 FG% margin... or +.023.
Wilt outshot Russell from the field in that series by a .556 to .358 FG% margin... or +.198.
Oh, and in their known blocked shots in that series, Chamberlain held a 29-8 margin.
In any case, remove the Wilt-Russell match-ups from that series, and it was basically dead-even.
Include the Wilt-Russell match-ups, and it was a Philly rout across the board.

1-0 When Wilt had an EQUAL roster, that was healthy. And BTW, it wasn't even close, either. In fact, Philly was a four point loss away in game four, from a SWEEP.

Re: 66-67 When Wilt Finally Had a Roster that Equaled Russell's
From what I read/heard about Russels Celtics. They were going to do 2 things.
1. They would try and stop Wilt as a team
2. Their strategy was to take more shots and get more rebounds in route to a victory.
So to say Wilt had an equal roster,
It may as well have said he had a team that figured out how to stop the latter strategy.

I wonder what sort of numbers Sam Jones would have put up on a worse team where he was the man. Are we talking West numbers? Because the dude is nearly forgotten today. Russell, Hondo and sometimes Cousy get mentioned. But Jones rarely does. Does he even get top 50 mention?

dude was Top 50 with a ROCKET

All players and coaches knew what he was.
Fearless, great defense, very very smart on the court, blazing fast until '68, amazing bank shot..... 10 rings.
I severely doubt Russell wins any rings in the '60s without Sam Jones.

Probably because he led two more teams, post-Russell, to titles.

He was silent, man. Nobody knows who he is. Very seldom gave interviews, avoided the limelight, hated glitz.
Never as great as Oscar Robertson or Jerry West..... but he was right behind them and always surrounded by great, great teams... STACKED teams.... and he was more than glad to make a bench guy shine when he got the hot hand.

yeah. Hondo ran things after those guys retired, for nearly a decade. He had some of the greatest seasons in history in the early '70s but even THAT is unknown.
-
Re: 66-67 When Wilt Finally Had a Roster that Equaled Russell's
Comparing Wilt and Russell with box score statistics is meaningless, and if anything takes away from the argument.
Regardless, you could give Russell an even better roster than he already had, and he still wouldn't win. Wilt made it his mission to win that year, and nobody stopped Wilt from getting what he wanted.

Hondo was a better player than Jones. Jones was a great shooter that could fit well into almost any system, but Hondo could do it all, on top of being one of the best perimeter defenders ever.

Russell himself is Sam Jones' biggest fan, and as indicated by the statement presented by Laz above, was critical to the Celtics success, but I cannot agree with this statement. Sam Jones was not a dominant playoff contributor until 1962. That's when his legend began. The '60 and '61 titles were won with him basically playing a Mario Chalmers' type role.
