Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Obviously it's a team sport, yadda yadda, but will his body hold up to make a career of it? In my opinion there's no doubt he's going to win a ring unless the Spurs drop the ball with the supporting cast for 10+ years.
He might start winning MVPs as early as this year.
This guy is at least 7'5" right now if not 7'6" and for whatever reason the Spurs are downplaying his height and it's just insane to see someone move like that.
Wilt, Shaq, LeBron, Jordan? Nope, this guy has them all beaten pretty easily. Anyone think those guys have an argument any longer? I don't think so.
To be able to legit guard any player on the court regardless of their position can only be claimed by so many people and Wembanyama is easily the most coordinated player ever for his height. I just can't get over it.
The guy is the biggest freak ever. Congrats Spurs fans.

Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
I doubt he stays healthy. Too tall. Hope im wrong. Definitely a freak

Hope youre wrong too because hes going to be one of the centerpieces of the league going forward. We need him.

Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Ralph Sampson had could move with similar speed at 7'4, though I think Wemby might be an inch or two taller.

That said, I think a young Shaq (age 21-22) would shred Wemby for 30+. Being tall and lanky is nice, but 7'1 with size and power and athleticism behind it is superior.

Shaq is bigger and has lower center of gravity. It’s a mismatch for wemby. It’s a different era and there obviously aren’t a lot of Shaqs running around
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Shaq would probably put Wemby in hospital tbh. The physics are wild there.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Dude an average 5 9 person could leg kick skinny ass Wemby into oblivion.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
I didn't mention basketball ability directly in terms of 1 on 1 matchups or that he is currently better than all players ever or anything like that though obviously I do think he'll get a ring.
I didn't mention strength and I certainly didn't mention fighting ^ lol.
He is not the highest jumper nor is he the strongest but when you weigh everything he is good at while taking into account his height and overall size I think it's pretty clear he's got #1 locked up.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
That said, Wembanyama is a bigger freak than Shaq and that's saying something.
Shaq's strength and size and speed had him in the discussion with Wilt and Jordan and LeBron.
But Wemby's almost a half a foot taller than Shaq and his overall coordination, mobility and fluidity is so far superior to Shaq I think it has to outweigh the other things that Shaq wins at.

Shaq was a tall giant too but built like a legit Gorilla. Wemby is like an 8 foot spider monkey. I appreciate his superior shooting skill and grace but it would be tough.

Wemby is allegedly 7'7" even though they've now listed him at 7'5"
This whole thing NBA players do with downplaying their height has always been weird to me. Does Wemby have gigantism? He certainly doesn't seem like it given his coordination.
But yeah comparing Wemby's athleticism is basically like comparing Shaq to a player that's 6'7" lol.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
By basketball standards, I may agree. I've never seen anyone move like him at anything close to that size. Closest thing I can think of is Hakeem, but he's way bigger than Hakeem and arguably moves just as well.
But one thing to keep in mind: he hasn't made it through a full season yet. The Spurs downplay his height because historically guys over 7'4 end up very injury prone. They want to avoid that curse in any way possible. =)

Lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
He's definitely not the most athletic player in NBA history.
He doesn't overwhelm you with athletic ability. He overwhelms you with the COMBINATION of height/length and basketball skill.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Wemby may be the most agile player ever for his height, but he's far from the most athletic player in league history.
For pure all around atheticism, Jordan, Shaq, Wilt, and Lebron all have him beat.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
You guys all underestimate general coordination for a player of that height. That in itself is already a literal once in an ever thing without even looking at any other thing.

Yeah this guy is every bit of 7'6" if not actually 7'7"
DPOY betting basically boils down to do you think Wembanyama will stay healthy for the season or not, lol.
MVP probably isn't that far off of the exact same thing either.

He should. I think he wants to play more like Durant but I hope him and the Spurs understand that he's a big man and should be used more like one before his window closes. Seems like they're moving in the right direction but it's just pre-season.

Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
I would put money on him winning MVP and DPOY together starting this year if I thought the Spurs were going to be good enough for him to get serious talks which they probably won't be. Another year or two.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
He's developed enough size and strength to pull off some Giannis shoulder charges off the dribble. That's huge. I've counted 4 or 5 of them across the exhibition scrimmage & preseason games. One on Kornet and another on Nurkic - sturdy-built centers.

Athleticism is speed, strength, leaping ability, agility, etc. Wemby isn't elite in any category here. He just has a freak combo of length and skill.

You have to take into account relative to size. That's practically the entire point. For our primitive brains you basically have to go with the eye test.
Nobody his height has ever had that level of coordination, mobility, agility, and speed or even remotely close. You dismiss what he has as "skill" and nothing more but there's so much more to it than that. Talent is what he has. Skill is something he is still developing.
He's now listed as 7'5" but he is 7'6" and might really be 7'7" and yet he can guard 1 through 5. Nobody in league history is going to be able to consistently guard prime him because he'll either go around them or shoot over them or overpower them.
You don't seem to understand. This type of thing is already extremely, extremely rare at 7 foot... 7 foot 1. This is literally a 1 of 1 in league history. People's abilities to be what is considered the traditional view of "athlete"(the view you have) go down exponentially with each additional inch of height.
His ceiling is limited by his health and literally nothing else. He will likely be the best player in league history if he stays healthy.

Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Lets see him as the best player currently before we call him best ever

His size is only vertical. Shaq was over 7 feet tall but actually ridiculously strong and well built. Wemby isn't. Hes a gazelle. I admire his coordination and skill for his length for sure. But athleticism? Nah. Not even close. Thats not why hes great and youre being wierd about it to try and win an internet argument.
The reason why he isn't healthy is because hes not strong. Hes fragilely built. That ain't peak athleticism. Lebron or Shaq is peak athleticism.
-
Re: Wembanyama is easily the most athletic player in league history but will he win?
Also Wilt Chamberlain. Dude had a higher level strength than Arnold or Andre the Giant while being over 7 foot running and leaping like a deer. Had olympic athletic measurables. You guys have balls making this bold claim and its so silly.

There are different types of athleticism for different jobs. It’s hard to say someone is overall most athletic. You have to specify what you are trying to accomplish.

Which is still nice... but most athletic ever? Not even close. Its an absurd proposition.
