Celtic overreaction 3 games into the season:

The Celtics could make a trade or two and make the playoffs. They shouldn't.

The 0-3 isn't all that misleading. The talent level isn't truly worst team in the NBA bad but its nowhere near capable of meeting the Celtics' standard. And that's not even what I want to point out about the team. The problem is the absolute best-case scenario without some kind of miracle trade: Tatum returns before the end of the season in time to get up to 40+ mpg conditioning (unlikely but to his credit he's doing his best to accomplish that), win the play-in, and then push the Cavs or knicks to 6 games. To accomplish this, along with Tatum pulling off a return from an Achilles tear that we've never seen before either Brown will have to play at an MVP level (at least a McGrady in Orlando level impact) or Neemias Queta, whose name I am still not sure I can spell correctly without looking up, is going to haveto figure out how to protect the basket and rebound at an elite level without fouling. I would put Brown elevating like that at a 20% chance (he has great scoring ability but is still lacking as a ballhandler) and Queta getting the necessary maturity in how he thinks the game in just a few months at maybe...10%. So we need to see them hit on these two long shots just to hope Tatum can pull out another Longshot and help them win a play-in game and lose respectably in the first round.

They should be open to dealing some of the excess guard talent for a big that can get the defensive boards (this is actually the biggest area where they miss Tatum). But I would say that the priority is building the team that will play around Tatum and Brown, not figuring out what kind of cast Brown could lead to 43 wins. I suspect that Stevens will use the Tatum injury as the excuse/opportunity to get a high lottery pick, which traded or used correctly could be all the Celtics need to be elite again.

I do believe that he's the foundation of a dynasty but he's in the Western Conference so EC team doesn't have to Ives over him quite the same way. Wish the Celtics could have kept that core together one more year but the Tatum injury made that most likely futile along with cost-prohibitive.

They will look to get under tax i imagine. Makes no sense to pay it this year. Still might be in playoffs cuz east sucks

I had them winning 47 games. Not having the proper guys to rebound the ball is one of our major flaws through 3 games. The percentages we're allowing teams to grab offensive boards is worst in the league. Its the worst by like 4 percentage points also. That'll happen when you lose Horford, Porzingis and Kornet. I believe we'll string some wins together once we start grabbing rebounds. Its frustrating to watch though.

There are only two good rebounders on the roster, Tatum and Queta, and Tatum is obviously unavailable while Queta still doesn't know how to play without fouling and makes various other mental mistakes. I don't think the rebounder is there right now. Really needed to win that first game vs Philly because the talent level is so limited. If they are going to push for the playoffs they have to win the winnable games because there are now teams like the Knicks that they just can't beat. To win 40+ games all of the match-ups with teams on the Celtic talent level or lower have to be wins. And unfortunately as an added psychological test the team start will only be getting worse as Zion Williamson is likely to destroy the frontline tonight and in a few days Cleveland might win by 30.

I watched the Cs/Philly game. Cs defense was awful. Pretty sure even I could score on Simons. He might not be the worst perimeter defender in the league but he's close. Interior defense was non-existent when Queta was out.

Idk Simons has been decent on defense so far. The biggest issue so far has been rebounding and shooting abysmal from 3

Simons came to the team with a reputation as a bad defender. He himself said he was never taught to play defense, so that rep lilkely is not unfounded (and is it possible for Chauncey Billups to look even worse). He has the athleticism to defend opposing point guards and he's not stupid so it's up to him to improve that perception. So far he certainly hasn't replaced Holiday in that regard but we've seen a few hustle plays. I don't think his defense is a game-breaking flaw, especially if we're talking about a sixth man. But the defense has unquestionably taken a step back from what it was last year. It would look a lot better though if the defensive rebounding was decent. Payton Pritchard is currently 0.3 boards away from leading the team in that category, and while that speaks highly of his hustle, overall that is symptomatic of suck.

Minor update: Minot and Gonzalez are definite positives. Minot even levels the playing field when it comes to the rebounding. Unfortunately someone will be getting moved whenever Tatum returns because they're aren't enough minutes but those two are the kinds of roleplayers you want.
