Memphis Violations

Didn't see a thread on this...

The University of Memphis is in the process of responding to an NCAA notice of allegations charging the men’s basketball program with major violations during the 2007-08 season under John Calipari.

The allegations include “knowing fraudulence or misconduct” on an SAT exam by a player on the 2007-08 team.

The wording of the report seems to indicate the player in question only competed during the 2007-08 season and specifically the 2008 NCAA tournament. The player’s name was redacted in the report, obtained by The Commercial Appeal through the Freedom of Information Act, due to privacy laws.

The player has subsequently denied the charge, according to university personnel.

The only player on the roster who competed only during that season was Derrick Rose, who subsequently was the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft last June.

If proven to be true, the Tigers could be forced to forfeit their NCAA-record 38 victories and Final Four appearance.

The report does not include allegations of lack of institutional control, meaning Memphis would likely avoid serious penalties that would have an impact on the program going forward. The report includes no allegations that would have occurred during the tenure of Josh Pastner, either as an assistant or head coach.

Apparently these violations are based on the season before this past one and seems to strongly hint at Derrick Rose being the "redacted" player in question. It's pretty much just targeting Calipari. What kind of consequences do you guys think Memphis and/or Calipari could face? Looks like Josh Pastner walked into a terrible situation.

Well, looks like the University of Memphis will have their 2007-2008 season vacated. Final Four, Runner Up, 38 wins, and the C-USA stuff. Probably (hopefully) won't be more than that. That Cal truly left the Memphis program in a terrible fashion.

Thats not fair for the incoming coach.. can the NCAA do anything to Calipari while he's at Kentucky?

Bummer for Josh Pastner. Obviously I have no first hand knowledge of him, but everything I've heard/read about him paints him as a saint. Talk about two ends of the spectrum.

Why do the coaches and boosters get off relatively scott-free while the school and the players get punished and their reps sullied?

Pastner was a Memphis assistant when the violations happened. It's more than fair.

What I don't understand is how the **** Calipari is off the hook. Isn't it pretty apparent that he would be behind this? Isn't it pretty apparent that the kind of recruiting class he has reeled in is just a little too good to be true?

Can't wait until something about WWWes comes out... I didn't exactly expect this SAT stuff though. Wouldn't be suprised if they find some cash being given to recruits and things along those lines.

Pastner was at Arizona in 07-08.

And to top it off, Pastner says he didn't know about it until after he was hired.

You're right, I don't know why I thought that but I was thinking he'd been there for 2-3 years. I wanted to correct that earlier but my internet was down.
