Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
People on here say he cant keep up with average point guards..that he plays bad defense etc...Then say he is a bad athlete...I dont get it, the guy has an amazing handle, finishes at the rim and gets to whatever spot he wants. On top of that he has been a top players at every age...
The guy is no less athletic than Mo Williams or Delonte West and they starters on a championship caliber team...They are no less athletic then Steve Nash or Fisher?
Its an amazing phenomenon:wtf:

Dont you see the elite body control and hand eye coordination and strong hands for the steals.
Than beyond the athletic attritbutes this kid has the some of the best court vision coming I have ever seen at this age and is already a great floor general.

Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
Rubio is not as unathletic as people here make him out to be nor is he as horrendous of a shooter, however to say he is no less athletic than Delonte West is absurd.

in the game of basketball it is by far the most important attribute

Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
I'm a huge fan, but he still has a kid's body so it's too early to judge.
He'll likely have to add more muscle tough, which would only help him become even better on D.

Speed?

In order
1. Height
2. Vertical
3. Wingspan
4. Speed
5. Weight
of importance

Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
Grease, that first video is so boring. Yeah they are hot moves but he keeps doing the same 5 moves and the same 3 passes.
-
Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
Why are you all over this kid's johnson is the more important question ...
-
Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
Speed?
Nope. Football? Sure. Basketball isn't about speed at all. It's about quickness, and more importantly change of pace. Look at Steve Nash. Certainly not the quickest player, but his change of pace moves with the ball makes him un guardable.
-
Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
if those videos are supposed to be his best athletic moves. then i laugh at you sir :oldlol:

Exactly, I dont need to see 10 mins of the same **** over and over and over again. Make a 1 minute video with his hottest looking plays and get on with life.
-
Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
i dont think its his athleticism that people criticize or question (at least in my experience) but more his strength and ability to guard a guy like Baron Davis or Chauncey Billups. Dude looks pretty skinny. I get the feeling a lot of guards in the league would have their way with him.
But guys like Steve Nash and Iverson have proven that if your offense is good enough, you'll get PT regardless of your defense.

I meant quickness, excuse my English.
That said, I think we can all agree the most important athletic attribute for a player depends on his position.

Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
He might not jump all that high, but he is certainly athletic. He has very fast feet and he changes directions lightning fast. I have no doubt he is going to be a great NBA player someday.
Steve Nash cant jump for **** and he won back to back MVP's

Really? The 18 year old skinny white boy from Spain does not have athletecism comparable to arguably the most athletic PG's we have ever seen? Thanks for enlightening us.
-
Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
Rubio plays in Europe. No one in Europe plays defense, nor is athletic.
Rubio coming to the NBA is just going to blow everybody's mind when he throws the generalizations out the door.

Jump from his own FT line.

Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
I am curious on what Brandon Jennings will test in the Pre Draft Max Vertical. He could relive Nate Robinson/Michael Jordan/Vince Carters 43.5 in vertical.

Be able to throw it down easily. Rubio can barely dunk from a running start.

if he is dunking in games then he can more than barely dunk. You dont try stuff in professional games.

I am just saying this thread was about why do people pretend rubio is so unathletic.
because he can't throw it down that is the main reason IMO.

The main reason for people considering him unathletic is him being a white European kid.

Re: Why do people pretend Ricky Rubio is so unathletic?
let's be honest here, we now live in an american sports era in which any white player in football or basketball is "not athletic", "not a good athlete", and "slow", regardless of what their actual capabilities are.
it wasn't always this way. the analysts and announcers were much more fair 20 years ago, even 10 years ago. i'm in my 30s, which i'm guessing makes me pretty old here. i notice that every year, the white athletes get less and less "athletic" according to the announcers and analysts. average black players are now praised, while white players who are somewhat better are talked down.
there's nothing i can do, so i just accept this as the way it is. today, it's simply automatic for american sports casters to inform us that white athletes are unathletic. during the coverage of the olympic basketball tournament, it was like they went out of their way to remind us that any white player who was playing well was actually not a good athlete, but performed at a high level due to, well, any other reason.
average black football players in particular are routinely described as having abilities that are far beyond their actual talent level. at the NFL combine, a white player can literally test out bigger, faster, stronger, and more explosive than many black players, but his scouting report will say he "lacks speed" or "has tight hips" or "does not have ideal size" or whatever ridiculous thing it is that the white player doesn't have. even if the white player was more productive at the NCAA level, the black players, with no evidence whatsoever, automatically have "more upside" in the NFL.

White players are in general less athletic than black players. It's not profiling, it's fact.
Not all stereotypes are wrong.
And I doubt a scout would claim a white NFL player wasn't athletic if he truly was. Their job is to evaluate a player to assist GM's in making important franchise decisions. I'd like to see the guy willing to put his job/reputation on the line by purposely mis-identifying a players athleticism.
