Report: Shanahan in discussions with Redskins

Quote:

Former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan has been in discussions to become the Washington Redskins' next head coach, according to two NFL sources.

The two sides still have some issues to work through, however, before an agreement is reached. The 4-9 Redskins long have been eliminated from playoff contention and have three games remaining with coach Jim Zorn.

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder began housecleaning Wednesday with Bruce Allen replacing Vinny Cerrato as general manager. One NFL source said that when Shanahan spoke with the Buffalo Bills last month about their new front-office/coaching openings, Allen was to be included in the package there.

The Allen-Shanahan partnership appears ready to take control of the struggling, but tradition-rich franchise in the nation's capital.

Quote:

At first glance, the Redskins' GM change Wednesday seemed to hurt Shanahan's chances of becoming the head coach there because he had a close relationship with Cerrato dating back to their days with the San Francisco 49ers. Allen, meanwhile, was well-connected to former coach Jon Gruden for several years in Tampa Bay.

But Allen and Shanahan also have formed a strong relationship over the years. For starters, they may have shared some horror stories of Oakland Raiders' owner Al Davis. Shanahan was fired as head coach by Davis four games into the 1989 season. Allen, son of the late legendary head coach George Allen, worked in the Raiders' front office from 1995-2003.

Shanahan's son Kyle also got his NFL assistant coaching start with Allen and Gruden at Tampa Bay in 2004-05.

Washington can take Gruden. I want Shanahan in Tampa, but that'll NEVER happen b/c the Glazers are cheap.

Shanny and Jerry are great freinds...

Shanny should know better, but if he does that is no big deal...Dallas will take the Chin or Holmgren or Gruden...

Hasn't Holmgren always been the type of guy that whats to draft and coach? Why take the dallas job if the browns are even giving you a little piece of ownership :confusedshrug:

All three of those coaches have Super Bowl rings.

I kind of want another fresh face... but maybe experience is the best way to go.

Depending on what Wade can do for the remainder of the season... I'd like him to stay for one more year.

If he doesn't get us a playoff victory... then he needs to go.

Not sure who I'd like to see as head coach...

Getting rid of Cerrato was a good first step.

Jerry let Parcells draft...he could do it again...coaches do understand that he is the GM though, and he does have to actually do his job...

as far as Holmgren wanting to take the Browns on instead of Dallas?...Well with the Browns he is putting himself in possition to look like he turned things around almost no matter what, so he could be attracted to that...but if he wants to coach the Notre Dame on the NFL then he could come to Dallas...

no matter how bad of a GM Jerry can be (overblown), he will never have a problem getting any coach because of what he has done to keep the Cowboys being America's Team...

Well maybe Jerry can offer Cowher a huge contract. There would be no December meltdown in Dallas with Cowher. Gruden is also a good coach and is easier to get. Wade looks too soft to get the job done in Dallas.

Why is Dallas continually brought up in threads where they should not be....

unless you think that Wade is going to win a couple playoff games, they certainly do belong in a thread about Shanahan...
