How stupid can they be to use that headline ???
espn being espn
lin...welcome to the world of non white athletes...where "slurs" slip through somehow.....
They've used that headline before I'm pretty sure. It was a college game headline.
The Asian American journalist group that (rightfully) protested jason whitlock's stupid and racist comments WON'T do or say a gotdamned thing about the espn headline.

Yeah because saying "*****" in the armour is an actual saying not a racist term, but ESPN should have been a lot more sensitive to how it could be perceived.

But my thought here, and I understand it's just my opinion, is that this is pretty inexcusable given that ESPN.com is a huge platform with a lot of built in processes, people involved, and higher standards.
The usage of this very common saying is not racist itself if you just go with its surface meaning.
However, the worst racial slur you could call someone of Chinese or Asian descent would be "*****" and while it has dual definitions unlike most other slurs, it's just all too convenient that it shows up here. At face value, the headline certainly makes sense. But the dual definition of that word essentially ensures that if published, their would be a shit storm. Now there is.
So either way you look at it, it's wrong and it reminds me of a famous scene in Casino when Robert De Niro defends the firing of one his casino managers after he failed to realize that slot machines were rigged for big payouts that occurred multiple times before he thought anything of it.
De Niro says, "Look, he was either in on it, or he was too dumb to recognize it. Either way, I can't have him working for me"
.......
I have my own ideas about why the group won't say ANYTHING about this headline.....even after (rightfully) forcing an apology from whitlock within hours of his comments.
Doubt that ish posters who back Lin will be as vocal about this as they were about whitlock's comments.
Reasons are one in the same.
I could believe it's an honest mistake simply because it's such an incredibly stupid thing to do if it's intentional. Wonder if ESPN will release the name of the writer who dropped this particular turd.
Honest mistake my ass. Get out of here.

so back in the 70s & 80s when certain announcers used to say certain players were salty that was okay?
And when people blatantly hide a racist comment behind the term "unathletic" that's okay too?
does welcoming lin to a world of non white athletes have any connotations?
I don't care for a double standard.
We're all men in this world, there's no time for hatred.
(apologies to ladies don't mean to leave em out)
That headline is creative though.. I admit I lol and I am a Lin fan.
They've used that headline before yep.

They obviously made a mistake, not realizing the implications of that phrase with Lin. They didn't do that on purpose, come on.
They originally wanted to use "Lin Looking Yellow in Defeat" but they went with the other one.
It's not a mistake, it is intentional because they have said in on ESPN in the past. Too ignorant to realize that's an offensive term.

I just don't see how a company as media-savvy as ESPN, the #1 sports-media company in the country, probably even the planet, could go out and use that phrase talking about a man of Chinese decent intentionally. I won't say it's impossible but that's just mind-blowing. This kind of controversy is the last thing they'd want. To purposefully offend people like that in the current ultra-pc age almost strikes me as impossibly stupid. This isn't some small-town paper in a Confederate state, this is ESPN.
Apparently it was posted at 2:30am. Somebody needed to get some sleep...and probably woke up without a job.
Are you kidding me? How can ESPN be that stupid.
I don't even wanna know what would've happened had that been a racial slur directed at an African American.

Remember 3 years ago when ESPN had the headline, "Kobe Playing Like a Lazy Ass N*gger"? I mean, I don't think that was intentional.......just a common phrase.

So now insidehoops blocks out actual english words because it has a secondary meaning? :facepalm
Holy Shit!! I just heard about this.
LOLOL that is ridiculous. What kind of idiot doesn't realize that Ch*nk is a negative term? :facepalm
Oh well, ESPN has no competition though so it won't be hurt by this.
lol ***** in the armor... hahaha.
wow.

Not a big deal. It shows how racist everyone is by taking a common phrase and making it about race.

It's not just that guy who said it once while in the middle of that live interview with Walt Frazier.
ESPN actually used this as a headline to an article of theirs on their mobile website.

Yup, perfect post.
The ESPN people who came up with the article headline and let it go through are either racist and making a joke, or they were too dumb to realize that you are not allowed to have a headline saying ch*nk in it. I don't know which one is better.
LMAO! They really did that? WTB screenshot.
article which updates the story
..article names names and details reactions by AAJA and espn

there is no way that was an honest mistake...
an asian kid losing for the first time and you make a title
"***** in the armor" :facepalm
common sense will tell you that you shouldnt do that, that bad things will happen.
if it was for a regular game, then go ahead and use it, but not in a game that is all about an asian-american kid.

So true.
Media companies aren't hurt by gaffes anyway- unless the FCC fines them, which they dont do anymore anyway.
Funny, all this time I thought it was "Kinks in the Armour", as in "The Bulls, who are still working out the kinks on the defensive end", etc.
But yeah, hidden racism is not hidden, in this case.

Seeing the headline and the direct reference to Lin this has to be intentional. I mean if it was just said in passing the Hornets found the ***** in the Knicks armour I can see it as unintentional, but its direct reference how could someone not see the connection?
ESPN just released a statement:
"We want to apologize if any Chinese-Americans were offended by that inappropriate headline that we used. So let us be the first to say, "Me So Solly!"
:facepalm
rofl I lol'd at the headline. I doubt it wasn't intentional. Everyone likes to have fun sometimes ahah

ahah listen man, I throw around slurs to my friends regularly. They also have their names for me. It's all fun dude. I'm far from racist, having dated black and hispanic women.

That makes you a racist, sorry to break it to you. You shouldn't even have to use slurs, if you were really their friends to begin with. Especially slurs that usually have a violent history attached to them.
