The NBA has Decided to Balance the All-Star Game Instead of Balancing the Playoff

LET THAT SINK IN....

This shit is hilarious. Silver may be WORSE than Stern.

What's horrific about this change is that the league acknowledges that they have a serious parity problem between conferences, but decided to make a change that has nothing to do with competitive basketball (see 2017 All-Star Game)

Pretty much a slap in the face to the Western Conference.

It's their way of saying:

"It's not about the best from the West vs the best from the East because the East isn't competitive."

Silver and the East....

2 disgraces to the league.

Maybe the East could have a play-off series against the G-league...could be pretty competitive.

Yeah. It's getting embarrassing now. The league knows it but they're too scared to make REAL changes.

Changing the nba playoffs would require a majority vote from the NBA owners.

The all star game was changed by the players association, and it wasnt solely for parity. It's an all star game lol. It was to increase the drama around the event.

If it's "just an all-star game", then why is it such a big deal?

Why make all the changes to "create drama"?

It's definitely creating drama, alright. The league is practically telling you that the east is ass cheeks.

They really need to change the playoffs because we can't keep having teams in the East make the playoffs that are barely above being bad teams and are just good enough to pile up wins against the multitude of tanking teams in the conference and less games against top teams. Seeds 6-8 this year are going to be a joke unless some young talent breaks out in a major way on say a team like The Magic, and this could potentially be the case for the next couple of years. Denying these teams a chance at a lottery pick is very detrimental to their potential development as a franchise. Instead these mostly late lottery picks go the Western Conference teams with at least a decent amount of talent and a much better front Front Office who don't need the picks as much as these Eastern teams with inflated wins from their Conference but are much worse teams. And although these Western Teams are almost always picking late in the lotto, they still get tremendous value picks with underrated potential because once the consensus picks are off the board, Organizations like the Magic or Knicks pick their annual busts in the mid rounds leaving great value picks at the end of the lotto for teams that have much better scouting and development to find undervalued college guys or international talent.

The whole East vs West playoff format is a joke. We don't live in the era of trains and there's no reason why the playoff schedule still has to be "Conference vs Same Conference" till the Finals begin.

Great post.

I agree. The conference duality is being touted as:

"the best vs the best".

Extremely deceiving...at best.

Sure there is. The Midwest / North East is where the majority of the ratings come from.

The NBA loves to do double headers during playoff time. When you have 4 West teams scheduled to play, which teams are going to play the 4pm local time game? How many viewers they going to lose due to fans still being at work from 4-6pm West coast time?

You think the NBA expects East coast fans to stay up till 10:30pm est for tip off against western conf teams in the 1st or 2nd rounds? You think casual Eastern conf. fans are going to watch 2 WC teams and have no rooting interest? Hard sell to advertisers

The NBA will never go to the top 16 team format. If they do, don't be surprised if it's only for a year or two so they can say "we tried it but the TV ratings went down so we're going back to the old format"

The problem is that the majority of the large markets are in the East. Having a lot of East games helps them schedule doubleheaders as well.

Although I pity the people who actually get pumped up for those games. Imagine being a die-hard fan of the trash brothers.
