It's not fair to Felix but after reading about Kittinger's jump I can't help to be more impressed with that jump. Kittinger still holds the free fall record too.
For anyone who's intereste, this is what Joe Kittinger did 52 years ago;

quick question for you aeronautical experts..since he hit supersonic speeds, shouldn't he have created a sonic boom?

Can't wait to torrent the shit out of the documentary coming out soon.
It will have all the head camera footage from the fall and additional awesome stuff.
Absolutely amazing stuff. Love the drawl of the old man talking him through the checklist in that calm voice... During the free fal everyone's looking at computer screens Kittenger has a old fashioned stop watch in his hand...
Notice he pulled the chute a few seconds before he would have broken the free fall record? I wonder if he did that for Kittenger's benefit? The old man still holds that record.

Could be, but I doubt he could have known how fast he was going with all the commotion around him. I think he stated that his visor was fogging up and that's why he pulled the shoot early.
I was panicking though when he was spinning around like a helicopter.

I'd be curious to know this as well. My guess is there needs to be atmosphere to create a sonic boom, only a guess though.
Washington Post:
Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner fell to Earth from 24 miles up Sunday, enrapturing millions of people following a live feed of his stunt as he became the first human being to travel faster than the speed of sound without the assistance of a craft.
During a four-minute, 20-second free fall, he reached a speed of Mach 1.24 or 833.9 miles per hour, according to an official with the National Aeronautic Association.
The data on Baumgartner
