In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Kemp(rough estimate)- 18/11/2/1.5/2 on 53-54%, All-NBA 2nd team/7-8 in MVP/2nd in defensive rating/top 5 in defensive win shares
Amare(rough estimate)- 22/9/2/1/2 on 54-55%, mostly All-NBA 2nd team with 1 All-NBA 1st team/6th in MVP and generally top 10/top 10 in offensive rating/led league in offensive win shares and 2nd one other time
Who would you rather have?

Kemp.

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Kemp would have been nice in today's NBA if he could avoid getting T'd up for taunting. The spacing that we see today would give him a lot of run to face up and mash on cats. I'd probably take Kemp over A'mare. This is a close call, and nostalgia might be clouding my judgement.

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Kemp, he played bigger. His dunks were angrier.
-
Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Amare has done nothing even with the 2x MVP in Nash as his PG. Kemp reached the Finals 2x I believe and would have won if he didn't play in the same decade as Jordan.

Kemp. Inb4 Amar'e is under rated

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
I think Amare is a better number one option. But I might just have to lean to prime Kemp. Kemp was devastating and to this day might be the most freakish athletic PF of all time. He's a better rebounder, passer, and defender than Amare. Kemp also had a midrange jumper damn near on par with Amare as well as a better handle. I think Amare's eye and knee injuries slowed his freakish athletic shit to a degree. And Kemp's game seemed to stall out in his late 20's and early 30'swhen he should have been at his peak. So Kemp became another what if case, instead the HOFer he should have been.
Believe it or not, I think Amare still has some upside in his game. He still has a shot at the HOF if he can finish out the last 8-10 years of his career strong. In terms of being able to finish like a beast in the paint and combining it with a very nice midrange shot, it seemed Amare, Mcdyess, and Kemp all had that going for them. Hopefully Amare can finish his career strong!

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Amare pre microfracture in the 04-05 season was nasty. I'll take that version of Amare over any version of Kemp.

Not at Seattle.
Posters look at ppg, but it was a different league back then.
Kemp would be a 22/10 guy these days.
If anything his athleticism and skills are underrated, he was really a brilliant player in his prime.

Kemp in that situation, with his superior athleticism (yep) and skill, would have been murder.

I agree. Amare was nasty before his knee injury. Almost unstoppable around the rim. However his 04-05 season production had a lot to do with Nash coming to the team. Pick n'rolls all day. Amare didn't even have a jumper back then either.
I remember he had a 50 point game that season where he went 20-27, iirc something like 15 of the made fg's were dunks. And then the following game he dropped 34 on 15-19 against Garnett, but again Nash was setting Amare up with open lanes for easy buckets all game.
I'd stll take Kemp though. Stronger on the glass and much better defender. Wasn't too shabby in the paint and above the rim himself.

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
I really didn't get to watch a lot of Kemp, but could anyone see him putting up 37/10 over a series on prime Duncan (yes I know they lost)?

Amare and Duncan were going at it that series. Definitely a fun series. But no, I don't see Kemp doing that.

Amare. Lmao @ people saying Kemp.

Against Malone in '96, he put up 20/9+ on 69% shooting. That includes game 1 where he put up 21/11 on 10/11 shooting. He also averaged 22/14 against Houston that same year. Kemp wasn't the type to score big points like Amare, but he was a much better defender.

If Nash was feeding him the ball, possibly.

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Kemp, a much better defender and rebounder, more dominant.

On that team, in that offence - given he had more skill and is more athletic ability - yes I can.
Taking away a terrible game 3 by Seattle overall, he dropped 25/11 against who many deem the best defender ever, against arguably one of the best defensive teams ever, and arguably one of the best teams ever, in the 96 finals.
I can't see Amare doing that.

20/9 isn't in the same realm as 37/10 and Malone isn't the same defender as Duncan is either. Those are great shooting numbers tho. Anyone got the shooting %s of the 05 series, I was having trouble finding them.

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Amare is definitely the better #1 option/scorer, but a team lead by him is going nowhere. Kemp definitely could not be the absolute #1 on a title team, but you can win a title with him as the #2. I'm not sure if the same could be said of Amare.
Kemp was a very good defender and rebounder, 2 things Amare is terrible at. Hell Kemp might have been a top 3 defensive PF at that point in time, and he would probably be the best in today's game assuming KG is considered a C right now.

Kemp was a dumb defender, he was always in foul trouble for a reason.
Kemp was a better rebounder and that was probably it.

I'm suprised no one mentioned defense.

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Enough with this Nash making Amare BS, what has Nash done of value without STAT? Amare was having a MVP level season playing with Felton 'a fat useless' scrub according to ISH. Discrepancy?

Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Being that I seen both of them play and I understand basketball, I'll go with Kemp.

In a comparison with prime Amare, you are going choose someone because of their superior athleticism?
-
Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Kemp's Seattle teams had a lot more balance on offense with McKey, Payton, and Schrempf. He could have easily been a 25+ppg type scorer if he were in the right situation like Amare was. He was also a very good defender at the PF position. Disregarding mental issues (weight/drugs/etc), Kemp was easily better.
-
Re: In their prime, Shawn Kemp or Amare Stoudemire?
Kemp was better at everything except scoring, and even that wasn't a big gap.

Kemp. He does everything better except scoring and it's not by much. Amare is the worst defender I have ever seen.

looks like everyone jumps on Amare the fire extinguisher fighter, sad Knick. He used to be phenomenal in his days in Phoenix before the knee injuries, with back to back 40 point plus games. He was a beast. No comparison overall to Kemp, but in the short time he was a phenom.
