Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/05/08/new-jersey-abortion-clinic-counselor-films-her-own-abortion/
25 year old emily letts is an abortion counselor and she basically tells women about the options they have if they dont want to be a mother yet.
She gets pregnant and decides to film it to educate women about the abortion process.
I honestly did not realize abortion was that quick of a process. For some reason I thought it took more than an hour.

Makes you wonder if she got pregnant on purpose to make a statement.

Why did so many people dislike it? are abortions still taboo?

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
This video makes me sad. It makes me sad because it's a cop out. "I'm not ready to have a baby."
I don't know how many times I've heard this. I would guess most people who get pregnant aren't ready to have a baby. And the way she did the video and she talks about it just portrays her being self-centered or selfish because she simply "isn't ready". The thing that got to me was how she mentioned she thought it was awesome she could create life. And yet the whole video is her killing life.
She's her own person and she can do what she wants to do obviously, but i don't think it's right or morally sound.
In any case, her disabling her comments on the channel is a telling sign that she wants to put her story out there, but she doesn't want to deal with what people think about it.

I would say in most circles I know it is taboo if it's simply because you're not ready for a child.

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
Nothing good would come out of comments on that video. Just death threats, bomb threats, insults, and mindless bickering.
-
Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
Over 10k people downvoting? :oldlol:
Much respect to efforts like this (though the video comes off as a bit corny/forced), people need to be educated so abortion can shed the "taboo" label.

That's fine, someone made a reply video and a bunch of positive comments are in that reply video about it. I tried to make a respectful disagreement reply about it, but it is what it is.

The video does nothing to educate anyone. Just some dumbass looking for attention.
What is it that you think people aren't understanding about it?
Mostly regarding the process, it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as involved/drawn out as one would imagine. It's possible that selective editing could frame it in a certain way that the process just seems less intense.
I do think there are a ton of hangups because people have preconceived morals and view it as anything more than contraception, but those will still be there until more people grow out of religion (not sure if this will happen during our lifetimes). That's a different conversation entirely, though.

I don't think you know what contraception is.

Is contraception definitionally before conception? I thought it was a broad term for birth control (under which early term abortions fall). Apologies if I'm using the wrong terminology here.

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
For religious purposes, we will consider abortion as murder.
My question is then, is it nessecarily a crime to take away ones life who had no chance of surviving?
Bad parents exist, period, unprepared parents exist. this includes that of biological and that of foster/adoption.
I've learned that some people might just never want to be a parent in their life, but then who knows why they got pregnant from the first place.
So, are people allowed to make mistakes?
My guesses are, abortion/murder is the result of compounded mistakes after mistakes.
The weapon of mass destruction, is the lifestyle each individual chooses to live and practice.

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
Watched the video for a couple of seconds and she seems like an insane person.

For you maybe. For me contraception is fine with the pill. Condom etc. This one a life was already conceived. The argument she was a adult and its her own body just shows shes a dumb sh!t who is irresponsible and instead of taking care not to get pregnant chooses to murder another life.

This all these pro choice fckers are just using I wasnt ready as a cop out. How easy would it be to just take a pill slip on a condom. She videos her self to say shes educating people on what how easy it is to end a life. That if your not ready to be a mom all it takes is 15 to 30 min and its painless and easy. Love how people in the comments calling her a hero to other women. Wtf she took the easy way out plain and simple. All I have to say is hopefully she is more responsible in the future.

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
I would say in most circles I know it is taboo if it's simply because you're not ready for a child.
I would guess 90%+ of abortions are due to the mother making the decision on economic and social factors other than rape or incest, rather than medical factors.
Eg. They are going to school and dont want to drop out, they just started a new job, they dont want to hurt their chances at advancement in their current job, they cant afford to have a child, the father of the child is not a man they envision themselves with in any long term capacity, etc.

It may be immoral, but It is a legitimate concern. There has been a lot of studies that explored having a child before one is financially ready, and in most cases it shows that it is extremely detrimental to the mother's (and if the father participates in raising the child) life.
They are less likely to finish school, get an advanced degree, make less money, live in worse neighborhoods, send their kids to worse schools, more likely to experience crime, etc.
Also it is based on statistical evidence creating horrible probabilities for the child born to an unready parent.

Abortions and Crime: Freakonomics Movie
"the legalization of abortion in the 1970s was the prime reason crime dropped in the 1970s"
Watch the 4 min clip, it argues something uncomfortable, but hard to reject.
I would guess most people who get pregnant aren't ready to have a baby.
I would disagree. almost everyone I know is having babies much later now, and overall the stats in America show that this is a trend. Women are choosing to have babies in their late 20s, and 30s rather than when the used to historically start having children.
They are doing this because they dont want to have kids until they and their spouse have established careers.
(Purely speculative and off topic) I personally think the trend of women having kids later in life is part of the uptick in autism. The eggs in the women being older and all.

For some reason I had always equated it with major surgery.

I didn't watch the video, but if her intention was to send the message that getting an abortion is not something to be ashamed of, I can support that message. More abortions is almost surely a good thing. The only thing I'm worried about concerning abortion is the woman's health.

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
What a dumb ****. She clearly has mental issues.
-
Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
Abortions are evil. Having a life that is less than ideal is better than not having a life at all. If you have already been negligent enough to get pregnant "accidentally", then you should not compound the mistake by then robbing a person of life.
If she REALLY wants to get rid of the child, why not put it up for adoption? There are many unfortunate couples out there who cannot have kids of their own and will be more than happy to give this child a opportunity at the life it deserves.

Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
the only scenario that could perhaps justify abortion are women who got raped.
-
Re: Abortion counselor films own abortion and it becomes a viral video
i think it's more irresponsible for a person who isn't ready to have a child to bring them into the world and have them live a ****ed up childhood. at least she's honest about not being ready / wanting a child. most people having sex aren't doing it to have children anyway.

A three-minute video is a pretty poor vessel for communicating her message, but I approve of the spirit of it...although I'm willing to bet that pro-choice folks would rather see someone who isn't quite so much of a dingbat speaking up here.
No sense getting into the discussion because its just people talking in circles and beating the dead horse.
