Is there a decent one that is free?
Or should I just convert to avi/mp4? If so, what program for that?

VLC or MPC. MKV is just a codec-container. Your favorite player will likely support it, if you install the correct codec-pack.
Well Vlc is prefect for just about any format but has terrible aesthetics so that should work if you're on a p.c and windows media player also plays mkv if i remember correctly. On mac, there is vlc, and Mplayerx. Divx is crap, dont install it!
vlc player, its free aswell even though it shouldnt be
VLC is by far the best player.

Seriously. I'm surprised that people still don't know about it. VLC is the last video player you'll need.

Yep. It still bugs me many still use Windows Media Player.
VLC media player. If you wanna play MKV in WMP you gotta install something like klite codec pack.
VLC or Media Player Classic will both play them right out the box, but honestly Windows Media Player is the best, just get the shark 007 codec pack and you;ll be set and can play whatever vids you want right in WMP.
Here is link to Win7 version of shark 007 pack:

I personally prefer Media Player Classic.
I use VLC. It bails me out when I have a file that won't play in other players.
Downloaded VLC, working beautifully so far
VLC for general non full screen screen video. XBMC for HTPC environment.
