Lawrence Anthony, a legend in South Africa and author of 3 books including the bestseller
The Elephant Whisperer, bravely rescued wildlife and rehabilitated
elephants all over the globe from human atrocities, including the
courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during US invasion in 2003.
On March 7, 2012 Lawrence Anthony died.
He is remembered and missed by his wife, 2 sons, 2 grandsons & numerous elephants.
Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his
home led by two large matriarchs. Separate wild herds arrived in droves to say goodbye to their beloved man-friend. A total of 20 elephants
had patiently walked over 12 miles to get to his South African house.
Witnessing this spectacle, humans were obviously in awe not only because of the supreme intelligence and
precise timing that these elephants sensed about Lawrence 's
passing, but also because of the profound memory and emotion the beloved animals evoked in such an organized way:
Walking slowly - for days - making their way in a solemn one-by-one
queue from their habitat to his house.
Lawrence's wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to his house prior to
that day for well over a year!
But yet they knew where they were going.
The elephants obviously wanted to pay their deep respects, honoring their friend who'd saved their lives - so much respect that they stayed for 2 days 2 nights.
Then one morning, they left, making their long journey back home.
that shit cra
For 12 hours, two herds of wild South African elephants slowly made their way through the Zululand bush until they reached the house of late author Lawrence Anthony, the conservationist who saved their lives.
The formerly violent, rogue elephants, destined to be shot a few years ago as pests, were rescued and rehabilitated by Anthony, who had grown up in the bush and was known as the “Elephant Whisperer.”
For two days the herds loitered at Anthony’s rural compound on the vast Thula Thula game reserve in the South African KwaZulu – to say good-bye to the man they loved. But how did they know he had died March 7?
Known for his unique ability to calm traumatized elephants, Anthony had become a legend. He is the author of three books, Baghdad Ark, detailing his efforts to rescue the animals at Baghdad Zoo during the Iraqi war, the forthcoming The Last Rhinos, and his bestselling The Elephant Whisperer.

Pretty incredible

Re: The Elephant Whisperer Is Dead. The Elephants F*cking Knew.
That is pretty incredible. Reminds me of the dogs that sit waiting on their owners long after they have passed.
Re: The Elephant Whisperer Is Dead. The Elephants F*cking Knew.
Who cares about his death something much more extraordinary might have happened here.
Is it just a feel good story or did the elephants really know he was dead and wanted to pay respect? Maybe someone brought them to his house to create this lion king bs?
Re: The Elephant Whisperer Is Dead. The Elephants F*cking Knew.
I don't buy it.
Those elephants don't know jack shit about anything.
Stupid thread. :facepalm

Or how about the dog that belonged to the dead solider that goes up and lays, clearly depressed, by his owners coffin?

elephants do have rituals when it comes to death. i'm not sure how they knew he had died, but if they did figure it out somehow i don't necessarily doubt they went to his place to pay respect. they do this for each other often.

Re: The Elephant Whisperer Is Dead. The Elephants F*cking Knew.
Love hearing stories about how animals amaze us more and more each day. We still understand very little about them, but these kind of stories have to warm your heart.
