So Kobe doesn't take charges? and MJ and Magic never did either?

Is that true? I would've sworn MJ did at least...

Bird and Pippen took charges and had bad backs. Are taking charges and bad backs related at all?

But we really shouldn't look at them. We should look at the league's top charge takers and whether they have back problems more often than non charge takers.

omg Nash has a bad back! it's true! taking charges will mess up your back!

never mind that there are 34 other players that are not bothered by it.

btw, i look down on taking charges for the simple fact that if the player falls down and the refs don't call it, the opponent gets an open shot with the defender on the floor. forces your team mates to close out the open man and leave somebody open and just generally fk up your defense.

not to mention it can go the other way and you are called for blocking. seems like a bad strategy if your players really aren't good at taking charges.

9 out of 35 for 25.7% is really low. other extraneous factors are also not taken into account. for all we know, it could be diet or conditioning more than taking charges.

Bird dove all over the floor. His bad back probably came from the reckless abandon he played the game with.

This is drawing offensive fouls. Not all of these players get them by taking charges. Show me a video of Kevin Martin taking a charge. Lol even Smush Parker is up there... get the hell outta here with this list.

I agree. A lot of floppers are the ones who are good at taking charges(ahem, Derek Fisher). Why risk getting hurt plus if you don't get the call you have taken yourself out of the play. Stay on your feet and just contest the damn shot.

I don't consider that low. I'd like to see a comparable list of players who play a equal amounts of ball but take less charges and see what their % is.

What if this strategy backfires and by Kobe following Michael and Magic, he ends up running a shitty franchise while dealing with HIV.

That's a rather simplistic and misguided point of view. Taking charges is not necessarily the right play, in fact it can easily be viewed as a risky play. Instead of trying to take a charge and perhaps letting the defender go by you when the official doesn't call a foul, you can stay with your man and contest the shot. Bill Walton, for one, was never enamored with taking charges, he especially disliked big men taking charges when they should be playing defense and challenging shots. Taking charges is hit and miss, people need to understand this.

From the same article

Quote:

"There's a difference [between taking a charge and flopping]. We all know what flopping is when we see it," Bryant said. "The stuff that you see is where guys aren't really getting hit at all and are just flailing around like a fish out of water. That's kind of like, where are your balls at?"

thing is tho it deters guards from penetrating especially if they get anywhere close to foul trouble. Mike Brown's quote in the article went unnoticed but he did say he puts taking charges over blocking shots in importance. It gives you the ball but more importantly gives the guard a foul, and makes him second guess driving, at the very least worry about any defensive fixtures in the lane a lot more. charge calls can be huge in clutch moments but i guess in a lot of other moments its just another play in a game.

Lets see how many players have bad backs in this list.

i swear all of them have been injured here and there, i just can't remember if they were back problems tho.

and theres still that margin for error with playing basketball in general leading to back problems, taking charges or not.

Yep. Even the poster just the other day in his attempt to prove than MJ flopped used a video of MJ taking a charge as his evidence.

Edit: Found it.

Yep I'm with you here. In terms of strategy, I don't find charges to be particularly riskier than contesting shots. If Rodney Stuckey is barreling down the lane, is it in Shane Battier's best interest to spring from the weak side, get in perfect position between Stuckey and the basket, jump, and try to block the shot? Or is he better off getting to a spot, establishing his position, and taking a charge? I feel as though one of those options would put him at a distinct disadvantage while the other would at least give him a fighting chance on a regular basis.

Without charges, there's virtually no reason whatsoever for a guard, wing, or whoever not to attack the rim with absolute reckless abandon. The only chance the defense would have would be to successfully and cleanly block the opponent's shot, which I find to be quite difficult to pull off on a regular basis. Elsewise, it's going to be a whole lot of free throws. Plus, contrary to popular belief, fouling to send a message isn't as effective as everyone likes to believe it is.

Further, it's not as if someone attempting to take a charge has to set their feet three seconds in advance. Again in terms of strategy, it's not entirely risky to attempt a charge. I've seen folks get side-stepped, but it's not a regular occurrence. Further, I'd venture to say those who are whistled for blocking fouls still likely pale in comparison to those who challenge and are whistled for hacking fouls.

Do you have a link for that list? I'm sort of assuming that list is just an all-encompassing "offensive foul" list, as opposed to strictly being a charges thing.

With that said, I do believe there can be a correlation between charges taken and back injuries. I took a lot of charges in high school and even in a 25 game season, the contusions to my lower back added up very quickly. It's not as if every charge leads to a back injury, it's just that it opens up the possibility for one.

He just doesnt want to share his true feelings and risk getting fined.

He knows in his heart what every player knows: taking charges is bush league and for bi*tch a$$ floppers who cant defend.

Taking charges is basically getting rewarded for flopping

it also shows true sacrifice for your team. teammates have to respect players who take charges because they're putting their bodies on the line more than anything else that occurs in basketball. its why they'll always run over and pick him up off the floor patting him on the back for doing it.

are you saying MJ didn't take charges? or the sample size is too small of him taking them to be of relevance in contradicting what kobe said?

I very much disagree with these statements. There is an extremely stark contrast between flopping and taking a charge. Taking a charge is a legitimate defensive maneuver. If someone is standing somewhere on the basketball court, they have the right to that position. As such, if a defender is set outside the charge circle and an offensive player decides to plow them over, I see no way how this could be interpreted as being a tactic for a player for bush league players who can't defend.

I will have to assume the quoted post was made in jest.

Kobe is not alone in this stance. Believe me. If a player of his caliber and importance to the history of he NBA doesnt respect charges, thats good enough for me.

Ill never respect taking charges, even when it benefits the team im rooting for.

Dude. Kobe adds in the interview that he respect taking charges as it is a SKILL. He defines it as such. He even mentions Battier.

What Kobe actually said from that same article:

Quote:

"Shane [Battier] does a great job taking charges," Bryant said. "Fish actually does a great job taking charges too. ... It's a skill. It's definitely a skill. I know at Duke they teach that, they drill that, how to step in and take charges and sacrifice your body."

Quote:

"There's a difference [between taking a charge and flopping]. We all know what flopping is when we see it," Bryant said. "The stuff that you see is where guys aren't really getting hit at all and are just flailing around like a fish out of water. That's kind of like, where are your balls at?"

Out of curiosity, what is it you don't respect about taking charges? Are you operating under the impression that a charge is the same as a flop? I cannot imagine that'd be your stance.

Jordan definitely took charges (probably one of the best of that era at drawing them, though he certainly tried to make defensive plays on the ball more often that taking the charge). So I'm not sure what you mean there.

There should be a pattern if it's true.
