This Years Gigantic Sleeper Is...

Matt Barnes...

Last season off the bench for Golden State he averaged just around 7 points, 2 assists and 4 rebounds with 53 three pointers made while shooting 42% and 75% from the line.

The reason he is a gigantic sleeper?

Because for one the Suns new coach Terry Porter has come out and said that Barnes will be the starting small forward. This means he will be getting 30+ minutes a game while playing with an unselfish point guard while in Golden State he had to share the ball effectivley with Al Harrington, Baron Davis, Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson.

In Phoenix he will likely be the third option with Raja Bell's percentages dropping rapidly. I see Bell as moving into a Bruce Bowen type of role this season for the Suns. Also Shaq is only going to be playing about 25 minutes a game and it is unsure if he will even play the second game of back-to-backs.

Even if he doesn't shoot more than he did in Golden State (which I don't see happening at all especially with Steve Nash as his point guard) then he will still offer I'm going to guess about 5-6 rebounds, 3-4 assists, plenty of three's made and a good amount of steals.

This is my 2009 season projection for Matt Barnes...

13 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, 0.5 blocks, 125 threes made.

He can get a little out of control which is his downfall because some nights he will have some turnover and foul problems.

But Matt Barnes is the sleeper pick for the 2008-2009 NBA Season.

Also he will be the winner of the Most Improved Player award.

Call me crazy but I want a ton of reps at the end of the season when Matt Barnes gets a new big deal.

Good choice Dozen ..he is going to be a sleeper this year. He's been drafted in two of my leagues , so there are those who know about him.

My Gigantic sleeper is Nene..With Camby gone from Denver and really no one of significance competing for C position, the sky is the limit for Nene. Look at his stats in the 2006 2007 season and look at the games he played over 30 min..there's almost a 20 and 10 guy there. Watch out for Hilario this year and try to score him cheap while you can.

Could be the Kaman of this season. (but I could always be wrong too! :D

Barnes was named the starting SF over Grant Hill, he has excellent value now.

He's a borderline FA, people will realize this 1-2 weeks into the season and I doubt he keeps his starting spot over Hill, unless Porter thinks he needs Hill to lead the second unit. Even then, he will cut into Barnes' minutes.

My sleeper this year is Russell Westbrook, own him in 3 leagues and he's been doing great in preseason.

Barnes had 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists in 27 minutes in his last preseason game. Terry Porter said he wants Grant Hill to lead the young bench. Even if Hill was starting then he can only play 20-25 minutes a game due to his age so Barnes would still get major minutes. People will argue that Diaw will also take minutes but Phoenix can also play a team of Barbosa, Barnes, Diaw, Stoudamire, Lopez in second and late third quarters.

I'm still standing by my statements and Barnes will still get 30+ minutes a game.

Re: This Years Gigantic Sleeper Is...

When did he ever get a chance to show himself?

Al Harrington, Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, and Stephen Jackson all got their shots before he did and he rarely got playing time.

Last year he only played 19 minutes a game and got six shots per game and still managed to average 6.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.5 blocks and only 1.2 turnovers a game.

Now he is starting on the Suns and his minutes will nearly double...

These are his numbers from last year per 36 minutes (starter quality minutes)

12.4 PPG
8.2 RPG
3.5 APG
1.2 SPG
0.9 BPG
2.2 TPG

Yeah...lifetime scrub

Oh and in 06-07 he averaged 9 points, 4 boards, 2 assists in 24 minutes and only eight shots per game.

He played very well during the games Artest missed last year. Put up something like 17ppg, 5rpg and 3ast in 41 starts last year.
