Re: Tipping at restaurants?
Why does America have this consensus that people should tip 15%?
I mean these waitress/waiters are making at least minimum wage PLUS tips. This is almost $20-40 per hour. How is that even fair? Thats a very very good wage for someone without a college education and doing some trifling work.
Other jobs like CPAs or attorneys do not get tipped. In fact, with these occupations, people try to take advantage of them and demand free consultations before even signing a retainer with them
No other occupation requires tips, but why restaurants? If those waiters/waitress feel they are underpaid, they can always get another job.
People who work much harder jobs don't even make $20 per hour.
If there was any doubt, now we know you're black.
Re: Tipping at restaurants?
rarely. Generally the tips are split to busboys, bartenders, and other front of house staff. It is not very common for the cook or dishwasher to get a cut.
Cooks and dishwashers are usually paid higher wages to compensate.
Re: Tipping at restaurants?
YAY! We've made progress. That's the beauty of the system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't want to tip? Don't!
Just remember the day everyone starts doing that is the day prices go up though.
Then you make sure those waiters don't get all angry and start calling me an asshole.

I'm asian.
Re: Tipping at restaurants?
Meh, the way I have always viewed it is that the tip is the way I directly pay the waitstaff for the service they provide me. The price of the meal is what I pay the chef/restaurant for the food/cooking and the tip is what I pay the waitstaff for attending to me needs and cleaning my shit up after I'm done.

Oh that's the worst thing in the world to be called an asshole.

You don't believe in it? Don't do it?
And if someone calls you an asshole, take it like a man and move on.

You can also tell those servers not to come out of the restaurant after me for not tipping.

Servers get paid on top of your tips.
Busboys clean your table. Servers only give you ur damn food. They don't even give you a fork anymore because the busboys set the tables for them.

What is your view of tipping in general? Barber shops? Movers? Valet?
What about how some restaurants slap an 18% mandatory gratuity on your receipt when you come in with a group of 6 or more (speaking of NYC, but if this were to apply to you). Would you have a problem with that?

But I make more than them anyway so I don't give a shit. :confusedshrug:

I dont' want to tip any of these people. I do it because social stigma dictates that i do it.
For the mandatory gratuity, I avoid these places altogether.

that is true. They have to be paid minimum wage, whereas servers/bartenders do not. Still, when I was in the industry, the servers killed what we made. I made ~15/hour at my last cooking gig and the servers there would generally clear 200-300 per dinner shift. So, here I am, actually making all of the delicious food and walking away with 60-90 a night (depending on the day and what post I was stationed at), while the person who brought them the food made more than 3 times that much? Always made me mad, but I digress.

just be a dick and dont tip then. who cares what they think of you? Just dont frequent a place enough that they know who you are.

So now i'm the asshole for not tipping???

The way I see it either you TIP or they raise the prices, if they raise the prices they raise the salaries which means the waitresses won't work as hard to please you.
Next time don't be a asshole and tip.
