Kings arena issues discussion
Sacramento Bee, August 31:

Short-staffed and struggling with a Sacramento crime spike, the city's police union publicly announced its opposition Wednesday to the Nov. 7 ballot measures for a downtown railyard NBA arena, saying city officials have made no promises to boost staffing to cover the new facility and surrounding development.

But if the city were willing to commit to minimum staffing requirements, the union would change its stance, said Jerry Camous, president of the Sacramento County Police Officers Association.

"If they built that in somehow, we wouldn't stand in opposition," Camous said in an interview after a press conference called Wednesday by opponents of the arena proposal.

And would the SPOA reverse itself and support arena ballot measures Q and R? "It's possible," Camous said.

Camous said at the news conference at his group's headquarters that the association wasn't opposed to the concept of a downtown arena. His concern was public safety, he said. The department had a severe staffing shortage, with 674 positions filled out of 796 authorized.

To be at minimum staffing levels, the city should have about 900 officers -- a ratio of 500 residents to 1 officer, Camous said.

basically, if you're a true Kings fan and want them to stay, vote yes. if ur one of those people overexaggerating the quarter cent sales tax, then so be it.

The police union is being pretty stupid here. They came out and made themself look really bad by doing this. Basically they're saying "if you don't give us what we want we won't give you what you want." Looks bad to me.

Sacramento NEEDS a new arena. It's too bad that people are so ignorant and think "well we can just get another baseball or basketball team if the Kings leave." Ummm sorry NO TEAM WILL COME TO SACRAMENTO WITHOUT A NEW ARENA. Dude said something like "lets get the A's!" Well why the hell would the A's leave to come to Sacramento? Why would a basketball team that's thinking about moving come to Sacramento if they have to play in a ****ty arena which is usually the reason teams leave anyway? People are just being retarded and short-sighted about this issue. It's a way for all the unions and **** to get what they want by saying "give us what we want and we'll give you what you want."

A new arena would do a lot for downtown Sacramento. It would be awesome to come to a Kings game in a new arena where there are lots of businesses around and sidewalks and stuff. I mean don't get me wrong I like going to see the Kings at arco but it's getting old and uncomfortable. When I go to Arco I think of what other teams have for arenas and I wish it was bigger and more up to date. There's some other things I'm going to save for later and this is how I feel about the issue.

I live in sacramento and i honestly think no one cares what the cops think. If you are anti-arena, this will just become part of your arguement. If your pro, you will call the cops stupid.

The Kings need to openly support this measure with ads and campaigns

^ Yeah they need to start doing stuff to hype the public....I know the Maloofs have some commercials and rally schedules, but let's see something happen now.
