Future Hall-of-Famers---Time Frame

How long does it generally take for people to say whether a player will or will not be a highly probable pick for the Hall of Fame?

Today, we know that the original 1992 Dream Team has 10 of its 12 members as Hall of Fame locks. However, imagine that in 1992, how many of those 12 guys were definately considered as Hall of Fame players?

Similar question goes for today. Which stars of todays NBA (lebron, Ray Allen, wade, Arenas, bosh, etc) could be considered future Hall of Fame material?

Locks that you'd be stupid to argue with: Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Nash

75% likely to get in if they retire today: Garnett, Payton, Dirk, Iverson

Still missing that crowning acheivment but close: Kidd, Webber, Allen

how many years after you retire you can be put in the hall of fame??

adamcz's classification is pretty good. Several players in the league today will make it.

I must be stupid then, because Nash doesn't belong in the Hall. Two undeserved MVPs does not a valid HOFer make.

Furthermore, Payton and Iverson are absolute 100% locks to get in. Both have far more cred than Nash in that regard. Garnett will probably make it, though I'm getting less and less sold on him every year. Dirk still has to put up great numbers consistently for some more years before he gets close to that level.

Two Mvp's is two mvp's though, and he has a habit of upping his game in the playoffs, all of which leads to sure fire HOF.

Ray Allen won't make it.....

What about gentlemen like Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady?

Also, is it too early to know if Wade and Lebron get in?

Kidd is a lock for the HOF.

...

Vince Carter also if he continues to play like he has in the playoffs for another 5+ years.
