Steve Blake has right shoulder surgery

Trail Blazers guard Steve Blake underwent successful arthroscopic shoulder surgery, the Portland Trail Blazers announced today. His recovery time is expected to be 6-8 weeks.

Can someone please explain this to me.....Blake injured the shoulder in January - rested it then came back. The Blazers have been out of the Rockets series for about a month now.....why would you WAIT to have the surgery??? Is it a simple matter of hoping it will heal without surgery???

Two reasons:

1. As you mentioned - it might heal itself.

2. Sometimes there is swelling. Surgeons perfer to wait for the swelling to decrease before surgery.
