2009-10 NHL Season Thread

The NHL season kicks off tonight, about a week and a half before it usually would because of the Olympics. Lot's of storylines that I can't wait to see play out. Will the Pens repeat? Can Chicago dethrone the Wings out West? Who is hockey's best player? Crosby? Malkin? Ovie? Or will players like Datsyuk, Iginla, E. Staal, or Thornton have something to say about it? Overall it should be a fantastic season.

Opening Night Schedule
Montreal @ Toronto
Washington @ Boston (Versus)
Colorado @ San Jose (Versus)
Vancouver @ Calgary

Leafs and Stars fan here. Bubble playoff teams in both conference (even though if Dallas stays healthy I believe they're a lock), should be exciting year.

Yea I like the Stars as a darkhorse cup contender if healthy and Marty Turco is normal again. It's gonna be hard as hell for the borderline playoff teams in the West to get in though. St. Louis, LA, Columbus, Edmonton all look legit on paper.

I've gone back and forth on TO, getting Kessel was huge. I'm not sold on their secondary scorers. Toskala and the new rough and tumble D should keep in the hunt though.

Rangers and Canadiens fan. With the Rangers, I see no in between. They're going to be either really good, or absolutely horrible. They traded Gomez for Christopher Higgins(not going to make them contenders), lost Morris and Mara, and signed Gaborik(good scorer, but injury prone). If Lundqvist can have a spectacular season, they'll be up there. But with the losses of 2 key defensemen, I don't see them as a playoff team.

Montreal on the other hand, looks better. They have Scott Gomez, a bit overpaid, but an excellent playmaker and can still score 15-20 goals. They have Brian Gionta, though lacking size, can still pot 25-30 goals. They now have Paul Mara, a solid D man and brings size. Mike Cammalleri is also a Hab now, a solid goal scorer and playmaker.

Rangers lines(not sure if it's accurate)
1st- Prospal/Drury/Gaborik
2nd- Dubinsky/Higgins/Kotalik
3rd- Voros/Brashear/Callahan
4th- Avery/Rissmiller/Moore

1st- Rozival/Redden
2nd- Staal/Girardi
3rd- Semenov/Potter

G- Lundqvist/Valiquette

Habs lines(not sure if it's accurate)
1st- Gomez/Cammalleri/A. Kostitsyn
2nd- Lapierre/S. Kostitsyn/Gionta
3rd- Plekanec/Laraque/Latendresse
4th- Metropolit/Stewart/Moen

1st- Hamrlik/Markov
2nd- Gill/Mara
3rd- Gorges/Spacek

G- Price/Halak

Montreal definitely looks better than the Rangers this year.

The only bright spot is they have some guys on the 1st 2 lines that can pot 20+ goals. They have virtually no D after losing Mara and Morris.

Lundqvist's overall awesomeness will keep them in the hunt all season imo. But yea it appears this team isn't much to write home about.

The Laughs somehow beat Detroit in last year's opener, and we all saw how far they went after that.

Ovechkin and Backstrom doin damage already. It's gonna be a good season.

Caps look crisp in the offensive zone. Surprise, surprise. Backstrom is poised to be a top 3 center in this league. Dude is a prototypical center. A young bull on the puck with excellent awareness, patience and vison.

Got some veteran presence in front of the net with Knuble. Caps ready to win the East. Philly worries me most due to their physical style of play plus ading Pronger but they have a goaltender problem. Pitt won't be as hungry

Game #1

Capitals 4
Bruins 1

Ovechkin: 2 G, 1 ast
Laich 2 G
Semin 2 ast
Backstrom (next Forsberg) 3 ast Theodore 1 GA, 19 saves

That's that Cup formula, get familiar
