Brent Celek signs extention through 2016

One week after signing tackle Winston Justice to a 4-year contract extension, the Eagles announced a 6-year deal with tight end Brent Celek that will keep him with the team through 2016.

Terms were not immediately available. Celek and GM Tom Heckert are scheduled to address the media this afternoon.

The Eagles said they have now signed 22 players on the current roster (including players on injured reserve) to multiple contracts. Twenty-two players are signed through 2012 and beyond.

Celek is one of four players from the Eagles' 2007 draft class still on the roster. Celek was a fifth-round pick. The others are second-rounders Kevin Kolb and Victor Abiamiri and third-rounder Stewart Bradley.

Celek has emerged as one of the NFLís top tight ends in 2009, ranking tied for seventh in receptions (54), fifth in yards (601), and tied for fourth in touchdowns (5) among all tight ends. His reception and touchdown totals also lead the team.

Re: Brent Celek signs extention through 2016
^But...but but but...he promised!!

Brent Celek promised that a few years from now he won't feel as though he's being underpaid.

The Eagles' tight end signed a six-year contract extension today that a league source said was worth $4.8 million per year, including an $11 million signing bonus. The deal has incentives that could push the total value to around $33 million.

The extension is comparable to the six-year deal that Jason Witten signed in 2006 with the Dallas Cowboy and five years from now it could leave Celek feeling underpaid. If that's the case, Celek said so be it.

"I'll tell you right now that I'm set and I'm happy with my deal," Celek said. "I can promise you that I won't be up here complaining about my deal. They put a trust in me by signing me early and have given me financial security for the rest of my life, so I owe it to them to play out my deal and that is personally how I feel and that is how I'll go about my business."

Certainly a lot of years but it's smart to lock up a young, talented Tight End. Valuable TE's are few and far between.
