Is the NBA...

...turning into a FIBA league? With less emphasis on physicality and defense?

hopefully, yes. More emphasis on what basketball is supposed to be, 5v5 team ball with fundamentals

Well...international basketball still puts emphasis on defence, it's just alot less physical. And just look at Detroit, a great team (their record speaks for themselves) or Dallas (which has gotten so much better with their game philosophy shifting towards an improved defence) or just look at any NBA team that has really weak defence and notice how poorly they're doing. So, I don't think the NBA is going that way...
As for what AppleNader said, I think the best basketball is a mix of both team ball and fundamentals, as well as fastbreaks, tricks and dunks as well as pure physical dominance and strong defence (IMHO that is...).

The thing is, that in most parts of the world, there is also "handball", a sport not to be confused with this smash-the-ball-to-the-wall-game that is known in the states. (check wikipedia for more info) Handball is sport with dribbling and shooting the ball on goals somewhat bigger than hockey goals. Handball is a lot more physical than basketball in Europe. So people who like playing physical ball games outside the US usually end up playing handball instead of basketball.
