Santa Clara oks new 49er stadium

pretty crazy considering their history in the city.. Santa Clara is about an hour south of San Francisco, right by San Jose. This stadium will be off the hook.

The team said that it hopes to begin construction on a new stadium in 2012, once project approvals and financing plans are finalized, with the goal of playing in their new home in 2014.

Once it begins playing in the new stadium, the team said its name will remain the San Francisco 49ers.

"We recognize that there is still a lot of work to be done, and it is now our responsibility to finish the job by delivering on the remainder of the plan," York said in the statement. "But, the best fans in the NFL deserve the best stadium, and our new home will continue to make them proud to cheer on the San Francisco 49ers for generations to come."

The 49ers have played in San Francisco since the franchise was established more than 60 years ago and have called Candlestick Park their home since the early 1970s. They have won five Super Bowls during their stay.

By approving Measure J, voters in Santa Clara signed off on a plan by the team to build the 68,500-seat stadium in the city.

Under preliminary terms with the team, the city and area hotels would contribute $114 million to the $937 million project next to Great America theme park.

Team officials spent almost $4 million in support of Measure J.

Santa Clara 49ers? it doesn't matter where you move, your fans are still gonna be a bunch of cheese and cracker eating, golf clapping lames.

That's a bold statement. It's gonna be tough to top Cowboy stadium.

San Jose will def be on the rise, im sold on the A's moving there, i think it will take that organization out of the "small market" crowd..

as for the stadium.. Santa Clara is a beautiful city, i guess its going to go right next to Great America.

Hopefully this forces San Diego to make a move soon.

I know they needed it, but I'm gonna kinda miss the old digs.

It was a very interesting stadium to see on TV, with all the weird nooks and crannies. Not to mention, the history. Now, they are just gonna be playing in another HOK designed mall field.

I know it's economically feasible to progress and move on, but I kinda miss some of the dumpy old stadiums. They had character.

I heard that the Niners are going to have PSL's for season ticket holders.

NOT GOOD.

You have to spend $$$$$ for the right to buy tickets....some BS. But hey most Niner fans are rich white people so it might work for them.
