Nets sign Sundiata Gaines to a 2yr deal

With Jordan Farmar out 7-10 days, the Nets have signed Sundiata Gaines, a 6'1" point guard who backed up Deron Williams last year, to a 10-day deal. Gaines, 24, played this year for both the Raptors and Timberwolves. He put up 5.8 ppg in Toronto and 2.6 in Minny. He's a Queens native.

Gaines became famous on January 14, 2010, when in just his fifth NBA game, and after just one practice with the Jazz, he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Jazz a dramatic 97-96 win over the Cavaliers. It was the first 3-pointer of his NBA career.

Farmar could be back by Saturday, Avery Johnson said, meaning he will travel with the team to London Tuesday. Quinton Ross, who hurt his back in warm-ups Saturday, will not travel.

Re: Nets sign Sundiata Gaines to 10 day contract

To the surprise of no one, Sundiata Gaines has been given a second 10-day contract. The 6'1" Queens native has played well since being signed, averaging six points and two assists filling in as third point guard in the Nets' two London games. At the end of the second 10-day, they have to decide whether to keep him.

Re: Nets sign Sundiata Gaines to 10 day contract

The Nets announced Sunday morning that they have signed Sundiata Gaines to a multi-year contract. Stefan Bondy reports that Gaines has parlayed two 10-day contracts --and a string of solid performances-- into a guaranteed two-year deal with the Nets. Gaines played with the Raptors and Timberwolves earlier this season.

Gaines, who gets pro-rated deal this season, will receive veteran's minimum of $884,293 for next season. The Archbishop Molloy product and Jamaica, Queens, native was ecstatic.

"It feels great, kind of a big relief," said Gaines.

With the Gaines deal, eight Nets have contracts that extend into 2011-12: Deron Williams, Travis Outlaw, Brook Lopez, Anthony Morrow, Jordan Farmar, Johan Petro and Damion James. Stephen Graham has a team option for next year that must be exercised by July 5. In addition, the Nets currently have two draft picks, the Lakers first round pick and their own second rounder.

That's a bargain imo. nice signing.
