Cavaliers buy Thunderbirds D-League team, who move to Canton, Ohio

The Cleveland Cavaliers will own and operate their new NBA Development League franchise in Canton, Ohio. The announcement was made today by NBA Development League President Dan Reed, Cavaliers/Quicken Loans Arena President Len Komoroski, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant and Canton Mayor William J. Healy II. The Cavaliers acquired the former New Mexico Thunderbirds franchise, which has ceased operations, and will now become the 5th NBA team to currently own and operate their own NBA D-League affiliate, joining Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City and San Antonio. As owner/operators, the Cavaliers will have exclusive control over all basketball and business elements for the franchise.

D-league teams help. Everyone wants to rag on the D-League, but there are some good players busting their ass in that league. I personally love watching D-league games because although the talent level is lower, the guys on the court are still reaching for that dream, and play with mad heart.

As a Warriors fan, I can tell you we have had dozens of players coming in and out of the D-league in the past few years. Sometimes we had multiple D-league guys on our roster... starting, and winning games... well a few. :facepalm

There's a "rumor" that the team is the relocated New Mexico Thunderbirds, hopefully not. Would be nice for D-League franchises to have some stability and stay in cities for a while, but it's minor league sports, so I guess that's what happens.

Sweet! I will def go to most of the games. I only live 10 minutes from Canton Civic Center. I'm all for there being more to do around home.

I like it

When the Springfield Armor came to town I bought a season pass and went to most home games, as it's 50 times cheaper then the NBA, but I got to see Scottie Reynolds, JamesOn Curry, and others bust ass.
