NBA age limit rules may change

While owners and players have agreed on a deal, they still need to work out some lower-level issues. The NBA age limit is one of them. It may change, or not.

Check out some possibilities by skim-reading this:

Potential incentives would include increasing the salary range for each year a player stays in school or allow him to qualify for free agency sooner.

I'd like to know how much earlier they would allow a player to become a free agent.

I read it's a one year off for one year spent in college type thing.

So no real incentive to stay, other than maybe a slightly higher salary once you come out.

Either come out early and get paid by NBA, or stay an extra year and get paid by the school.

Good point.

OK, don't skim it. A regular read will do.

Let these talented 18 yrs.old play in the NBA. These guys are gonna earn more money in the NBA, and if they have a problems adjusting in the NBA they are eligible to play in the NBDL. You have 17 or 18 yrs.old playing in the NHL right now.

Yeah that's why they need to develop their minor league system. Hockey has a minor league. College should be for student/athletes not guys just wanting to play basketball.

Agreed.

However, the NCAA wanted this rule to remain the same because highly touted freshmen make up a majority of the top teams across the country.

I would like to see Athletes stay in school for 3 years but with all the other issues that are caused by it I guess the current system is fine. However, the NCAA really needs to take a long/hard look at ways at reforming because with all the recent problems that have occurred it has really exposed just what a sham that the Student Athlete has become.

It's usually better for the teams for the players to have more college time because it's usually easier to see how good they are ... that being said, I think for players like Selby and Stephenson would've been first rounders from High School...

Forget where I heard Charles say this but he said if they required players to stay in college longer, maybe 3 years? The NBA overall would be better because each player's game would be more refined entering the league. A lot of these kids come to the NBA with very few skills polished and never really learn fundamentals. And by the time teams see them play, it's too late and they are already demoted to scrub status.

Players should be allowed to go to the D league out of highschool for a year before going to the NBA
