2012 MLS Thread

The 2012 season of Major League Soccer will start in the next two weeks!!

Montreal Impact is the new team to join the league this season, making it the third Canadian team after Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps.

The defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy now looks stronger than ever with returning David Beckham, staying Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and re-signed Juninho. Edson Buddle, who scored gazillion for the Galaxy the year before, also returns. The only core that they will miss for the season is Omar Gonzalez who tore his ACL while playing aboard during off-season. The team somehow manage to have all of them under a limited cap space, which make them truly the New York Yankees of MLS.

The second biggest team, New York Red Bulls, will still have Theirry Henry, Rafa Marquez among others, with a major addition in Kenny Cooper, that could be enough to be the contender in the East again. They will have a tough time dealing with their rookie goalkeepers since a departure of Frank Rost though.

There are also a bunch of rumours of big-name players interesting to join MLS during European free agency period. One of them is Michael Ballack, who is interested to spend his final two years in North America. NYRB, Impact, Chicago Fire, Philadelphia Union and Seattle Sounders reportedly express interest in him.

Galaxy 2-1 NYRB is the preseason game result in Tucson, AZ.

It's the rematch from the playoff series last season. but several players missed the game because of international duties though. Henry and Cooper scored one each. Galaxy got one from another Beckham-to-Magee connection.

I tried so hard to get into it last year. I figure it's my domestic league, and I watched as much as I could but... man I just had too many other options.

Andn this year will be even harder what with Euro 2012 and the Olympics. But I'll catch a few Quakes games.

BTW, the season will unofficially start with CONCACEF Champions League quarter final between LA Galaxy and Toronto FC at Rogers Centre in Toronto, and 45,000 seats are sold out already.

Re: 2012 MLS Thread

We should be better last year. We improved our depth and got some capable subs/rotational starters which crippled us last year. The lost of Ream will hurt but he did regress last year compared to his excellent rookie season and he's off to bigger and better things in England(He'll be the starting CB for USMNT) Henry is in some wicked form so that's a plus considering last year he was struggling early on

But it kind of sucks that Juan Agudelo will be missing time for the Olympics and he probably will be behind Henry, Luke Rogers(Needs to get his visa), and possibly Cooper in the depth chart. Backe doesn't really like Agudelo for some odd reason. Cooper is a great pickup and we didn't give up much for him. But the problem is that he isn't a target forward but more of a winger but still he's skilled and was a prolific MLS scorer with his FC Dallas days.

The key for the team is Rafael Marquez. If he plays like a bum like last year we'll be an average/above average squad. BUT, if he can play to the level which he played in the past or for Mexico than we'll be competing for some trophies.

I also like the signings we made. We signed a big Swedish CB who should help our defense and should help us in our set pieces which was woeful last season. We also signed Wilman Conde who was a great MLS CB, but he's coming off injury and he's not 100% fit. We are probably going to go after a 3rd DP in the summer probably a CAM

Also, our GK position will not be a concern as both of our GK's have been playing great this preseason. Were probably going to start Ryan Meara in net this year and he's a 2nd round pick rookie who has been playing great so far.. Alot of praise for him

This is the starting lineup most likely
--------Henry---Rodgers
Lindpere--Tainio--Marquez--Richards
Miller--Conde--Hulgressen--Solli
-------------Meara

But, they will score a shit ton of goals and they will be fun to watch..

I see them repeating the Supporters shield for a third time but failing to win the Cup

I'm expecting the Galaxy to win out this year. Keane, Beckham, Juninho, Donovan, Maggee, Cristman, Noonan, Nakawaza. Man the offensive side is loaded. With Ricketts dealt and Gonzales injured, the Gals defense is going to be the iffy side. AJDLG, Dunivant, Leanardo and Franklin need to step up

True...that Gonzalez injury hurts. I was hoping that he might get a run with the national team.

TFC, for the first time in 6 years of its existence, managed to have the good core from last season intact, Frings, Koevermans, De Guzman, Joao Plata, Eckersley, and a bunch of youngsters. Also, the form for the second half of last season was very promising. I just hope they can carry on into this and finally make the playoff.

Toronto FC 2-2 LA Galaxy, is your final.

What an incredible scene I experienced at the SkyDome.

- It was packed at almost 50k attendances, the second largest in Toronto soccer history after Roma vs Celtics in 2004.
- Steamers, which are technically banned at BMO Field, were all over the place like the good ol' days..... 4-5 years ago.
- TFC's rookie Luis Silva scored his very first goal in his pro career in his very first game.
- Forget Becks, who actually did very good jobs doing his things, Landon Donovan is the absolute beast and should be MoTM tonight.
- Actually, fans did make Becks pissed off with a beer can throwing at him while he tried to kick the corner. Well, that led to a tying goal seconds after. Lesson learned: Don't Piss Beckham Off.

I will post some pictures in TFC Thread in Raptors Forum very soon.

I would give Frings the MOTM. Rock solid defending all night and composed on the ball to calm down all the youngsters all night, and nothing needs to be said about his assist on the Silva goal, world class delivery.
