This is old but explains what may be going on.
It is extremely hard for Phil to travel, the Lakers want him but he can't deal with the travel, they have always refused to let him coach just the home games.
This would be an agreeable compromise. Plus Phil can always take over for the playoffs, traveling for only playoff games wouldn't be so bad.
