A riddle....again...

A riddle for those who cannot sleep...

Ann is thinking of a number between ten and a thousand.

Bob is trying to guess the number

Bob: "Is it less than five hundred?"
Ann answered, but she lied.

Bob: "Is it a square number?"
Ann lied again

Bob: "Is it a cube number?"
Ann answer truthfully this time

Bob: "All right I got two answers, the number you are thinking of must be one of them"

What is the number Ann was thinking of?

Does he know she lied?

All we know is she lied twice and told the truth once. How do we figure it out with only that? No possibilities have been eliminated,

Re: A riddle....again...

my solution's in white, highlight if interested (should be right)

3 statements

1) numbers n 10≤n<500: 490 (501 otherwise)
2) squares s 10≤s≤1000: 28 (963 otherwise)
3) cubes c 10≤c≤1000: 8 (983 otherwise)

8 possibilities: ttt, ttf, tft, tff, ftt, ftf, fft, fff

ttt: 490 (1) --> 19 (2) --> 1 (3) [64 only possibility]
ttf: 490 (1) --> 19 (2) --> 18 (3)
tft: 490 (1) --> 471 (2) --> 5 (3)
tff: 490 (1) --> 471 (2) --> 24 (3)
ftt: 501 (1) --> 9 (2) --> 1 (3) [729 only possibility]
ftf: 501 (1) --> 9 (2) --> 8 (3)
fft: 501 (1) --> 492 (2) --> 2 (3) [512, 1000 only possibilities]
fff: 501 (1) --> 492 (2) --> 490 (3)

since he said there are two answers, that means she told him FFT (i.e. <500, not a square, is a cube), so he's uncertain as to whether it is 512 or 1000; since the first two are lies, that means it's actually TTT, which only has 64 as a possibility

thanks for the entertainment OP

You should post more of these riddles. I wanna put my new mathematical/logic skill set (which still kinda sucks) to practice.

Curse you, fpliii, for answering so quickly though. :oldlol:

These puzzles are too challenging for people like me who never took a college level logic course :(
