Denzel Washington is #1 in my book. He's excellent in everything that he does.
I would say Afleck and Jamie Foxx round out my top 3.
Oops, I'm sorry. I'm supposed to be racist.
So no Denzel, and no Foxx. Replace them with Leo and Matt Damon.
nic cages accent in con air is still the crowning achievement in the history of cinema for me, so he is #1.
1. Joaquin Phoenix
2. Michael Fassbender
3. Jeremy Renner (especially after American Hustle)
HM to McConaughey.

Denzel is Denzel in every movie. Typical Denzel playing Denzel in a different script. I do not understand all the praise he gets. I enjoy watching his movies and watching him as an actor, but, cmon son, he is not versatile at all.

Versatility doesn't mean greatness.

it mostly does yea

No it doesn't.
Being dominantly good at one thing is exactly the same as being above average at a lot of things.

not sure people mean "above average" when they say versatility..

Maybe, but versatility paired with great acting is what make a "great" actor.
Denzel is great at acting, but he is not versatile and that is why I do not believe he should be put on people's lists of top current actors.

maybe not versatile in choosing his films, as they're mostly action flicks that have a certain style, a great one at that.
But he's definitely a versatile actor, he shows a lot of different emotions in those movies, going from a ghost faced killer to a man that is broken down emotionally.
Yeah, he doesn't tend to choose happy roles or something like that, but why does that really matter?
Michael Caine has done one role for the last 10 years in every movie he's in. And he's so damn great I put him on top of my list.
Just look at this scene in a very great and powerful movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsBK3gyMFcw
