why europe is so mediocre in the computer field?

First of all is an honest question.... Why do you think europe lacks in the software dev field?

Unix/linux (iOS, android, macOS, etc) = mostly developed by americans.

Windows = obviously american

Google, facebook, etc = same

Why?

Europe may not have as many start-ups as Silicon Valley, but Europe - Scandinavia / Germany in particular - is not mediocre in the computer field.
  • Linus Torvalds (the inventor of Linux) is Finnish. Ditto with Innobase (the company behind the guts of MySQL).
  • SAP, one of the largest enterprise software companies (on par with Oracle or IBM), is German.
  • Lots of new innovation, like services such as Spotify, out of Sweden.
  • If you count Israel as 'European', they've also invented the flash drive.
I could go on and on.
  • You know that thing.. umm.. THE WORLD WIDE WEB?
yeah, you can thank this guy.
  • Skype=Estonia. Beat that.

edit: Ok.. here's more.
  • Dassault systems is French. SUSE Linux is German. Lots of enterprise software too - Sage, NICE, Qliktech, etc.
  • Sergey Brin (Google's co-founder) is Russian. Lars Rasmussen (the co-inventor of Google Maps) is Danish.
  • The godfathers of modern computing - guys like Alan Turing (British), Dijkstra (Dutch), von Neumann (Hungarian) are mostly European.

Many of the largest OS / Enterprise companies are headquartered in the US because the computer industry exploded out of the US West Coast in rather short time in the 70's-90's - but it drew in minds from all over the place, and now those global companies employ tons of European developers as well.

America just got there first. There probably are a lot of companies that have been bought by Microsoft and Apple and whoever too. So it isn't like they didn't make it, they are just absorbed into American corporations.

You also have to ask how many specific technologies are created by Europeans for those companies. They would all have plenty of international employees which means not every feature and innovative idea is specifically American. The same goes for employees from Asia, Oceania, the Middle East etc.

I would suspect this has a lot to do with it.

Our immigration would probably as well.

Also English is super important.

Scandinavia has also maybe the best Internet Technology & ISPs on planet earth (for the money), most have Fiber connections, when i lived in Denmark i had a Fiber 100/100 connection for 30$ per month.

Scandinavia also make the best games, Sweden has DICE for example... Battlefield 3 baby

No kidding. North America has some of the slowest internet in the world AND we pay the most. Not to mention our ISP's throttle our speeds if we use them to their pathetic potential as well as low bandwidth limits. That's what happens when a few companies control everything.

Re: why europe is so mediocre in the computer field?

This seems interesting.

Quote:

The federal government wants to create super WiFi networks across the nation, so powerful and broad in reach that consumers could use them to make calls or surf the Internet without paying a cellphone bill every month.

The proposal from the Federal Communications Commission has rattled the $178 billion wireless industry, which has launched a fierce lobbying effort to persuade policymakers to reconsider the idea, analysts say. That has been countered by an equally intense campaign from Google, Microsoft and other tech giants who say a free-for-all WiFi service would spark an explosion of innovations and devices that would benefit most Americans, especially the poor.

The airwaves that FCC officials want to hand over to the public would be much more powerful than existing WiFi networks that have become common in households. They could penetrate thick concrete walls and travel over hills and around trees. If all goes as planned, free access to the Web would be available in just about every metropolitan area and in many rural areas.

The new WiFi networks would also have much farther reach, allowing for a driverless car to communicate with another vehicle a mile away or a patient’s heart monitor to connect to a hospital on the other side of town.

Yea i heard about that, but overall Europe is kindof like US in that department, depends on which country you are... here in Croatia we suck at that, ADSL 10/1 for 48$ / month :facepalm But hey, we can play basketball... :P

Re: why europe is so mediocre in the computer field?

Americans have always been at the forefront of technological revolution, especially regarding the internet and computing. Microsoft, Apple, HP, Adobe, Cisco, Bell Labs, PARC, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, IBM, Dell, the C/C++/Java languages, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, Amazon, Wikipedia, Youtube (pre-Google), transistors, semiconductors, the internet itself (ARPANET). Not to mention the pioneers of the math, logic and engineering that drives all of it. It's dizzying how much American ingenuity and entrepreneurship dominates today.
