Indianapolis Star - As expected, guard Peja Stojakovic opted out of his contract with the Pacers today, and is now an unrestricted free agent.

The free agent negotiating period begins July 1, and teams can start signing players July 12. Pacers officials have said they want to re-sign Stojakovic, according to the Indianapolis Star.

"We are going to see what's out there and listen to what other teams have to say, but Peja is the Pacers to lose," Stojakovic's agent, David Bauman, said. "The contract he signed before was done as a restricted free agent, so he didn't really get a chance to test the market."

Stojakovic, 29, who made $7.6 million this past season, hopes to get a raise and lock in a long-term contract. The Pacers can sign him for up to six years, while other teams can only sign him to a five-year deal.

"Anyone that says it's not about money is a liar," Bauman said. "Peja is going to get his big contract. Peja likes the Pacers because they have a base to build off. . . . Peja is a guy that can give a lot more than what he showed last year."

i hope it wasn't posted before

So which team will have the worst move of the summer?

fatboy11 06-26-2006 10:46 PM

He'll get a slight raise.

I agree. Whoever pays Peja big money will regret it.

One-dimensional player up for grabs.

GoRapz 06-26-2006 10:51 PM

Biggest contract I can see someone offer him is 9 million. 10 million if they really, really want him.

Zombles 06-26-2006 10:52 PM

Houston wins a championship if they sign him.
Doubt they have the cap space though.

Denver could also use outside shooting like his desperately but their SF position is already locked.

Basically any team that needs a 2nd/3rd option; a shooter to space the floor and let the other guys slash or work in the post could use Peja.

He'll still give you scoring in the high teens on 40%+ from 3, along with decent defense and rebounding.

He does not deserve 9-10 million though.

Now peja signing for the vets minimum is the only solution to the pistons problem. They need a bench a Peja could bring it. But its only a dream.

He's gotta stay with Indy. I doubt anybody gives him more money than they would. And they have a interior force, which will help his game, and he can also help Jermaine's game. He already played better in Indy and he barely got to play with JO. They won every game he played in during the playoffs.

Unless he does take less money to play for Miami, Denver, Cleveland, Houston or San Antonio, there's not a better situation for him out there to win in than the one he's already in.

At 29, there is no way he plays for less. This is his big payday. Once he reaches 35, he'll play for nothing to win a title...like they all try to do.

I say Pacers give him 6 years, close to $60 million. Probably not worth it, but Pacers can't afford to lose him.

Toronto

1. Drafts Barghnani.
2. Signs Peja.
3. Re-signs Mike James.
4. Signs Ty Lue as James's backup.

The Raptors then have a deep front court in Graham, Barghnani, Bosh, Villenueva, Nesterovic, Stoyakovic, with a backcourt of James, Peterson, Lue and Williams.

Y2Gezee 06-26-2006 11:32 PM

Actually I forgot about Toronto (easy to do) and them having cap space. He and Bosh would be a nice duo too.

Zombles 06-26-2006 11:36 PM

Raptors need some interior defense more then anything else.

Big One 06-27-2006 12:32 AM

i would rather go for joel pryzbilla if i were the raptors, he would come cheaper and probably be very valuable to the team at the same time.
