John Thompson III(Georgetown) = Worst choker in current NCAA
John Thompson III had a nice start in Georgetown with one sweet 16 and then a final 4 appearances. Nonetheless, his recent coaching profile has been nothing but humiliations. Let's take a look at the details of his performance in March Madness for the last five years:
2007-2008 season(28-6): No.2 Georgetown 70-74 No.10 Davidson, NCAA Tournament 2nd round
2008-2009 season(16-15): Missed NCAA tournament lol, ranked in preseason top 25
2009-2010 season(23-11): No.3 Georgetown 83-97 No.14 Ohio, NCAA Tournament 1st round
2010-2011 season(21-11): No.6 Georgetown 56-74 No.11 VCU, NCAA Tournament 1st round
2011-2012 season(24-8): No.3 Georgetown 63-66 No.11 NC State, NCAA Tournament 2nd round
2012-2013 season(25-7): No.2 Georgetown 68-78 No.15 FGCU, NCAA Tournament 1st round
So he and his team has choked FIVE consecutive times in the past six years, or maybe six considering its probably an even bigger choking job to lead a preseason top 25 team to miss the NCAA tournament? Its interesting to note that for the five times Georgetown made it to NCAA tournament, they received at least a 3 seed with the only exception in 2011. They have also been losing to double-digit seeded underdogs all the time. Apparently they were heavily favorite in all of the games, and he could not manage to win any of them. No sweet 16 trips, only early exit and blowout losses.
And yeah, we understand that NCAA tournament is one and done type, even greatest programs like Duke and Kansas choke every now and then in heavily favorite games. Georgetown under John Thompson III is, however, choking on a completely different level. The realistic questions for this choker is, when was the last time he did not choke in NCAA tournament? Six years ago? Ah, you got the idea. It is one thing to choke once in NCAA tourney, it is another thing to choke from time to time in NCAA tourney, and it is EPIC to never stop choking.
On a side note, I do realize that there were many circumstances that Georgetown was actually overrated and ended up with a higher seed than they were supposed to. A team with 11 losses should be nowhere close to a 3 seed, and apparently this was true after witnessing 14 seed Ohio blowing out a weak 3 seed. But anyway, all of those game are winnable and heavily favorite for Georgetown, and he could not reach sweet 16 while in a rather favorable position.
This year's choking job is even more inexcusable, a No.2 seed losing in 1st round being 14pts favorite before the game began. Considering FGCU used to be up by as much as 19, this actually is as humiliating as a blowout loss. I'd say its about time for Georgetown to fire this choker, they are historically a great program and they deserve a better coach. So, time to pull the trigger?
