Orlando Magic take Romero Osby in 2013 NBA draft
The Orlando Magic selected forward Romero Osby (AHZ-bee) in the second round (51st overall) of the 2013 NBA Draft.
Osby (6’8”, 230, 5/7/90) appeared and started in 63 career games during two seasons at the University of Oklahoma, averaging 14.4 ppg., 7.2 rpg. and 1.1 apg. in 29.4 minpg., while shooting .509 (321-631) from the field. He also played in 71 games (three starts) in two seasons at Mississippi State University, averaging 4.2 ppg. and 2.6 rpg. in 12.8 minpg.
Last season as a senior (2012-13), Osby played in 32 games (31 starts), averaging 16.0 ppg., 7.0 rpg. and 1.3 apg. in 28.7 minpg., while shooting .526 (174-331) from the field. He was an All-Big 12 First Team selection, leading the Sooners in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and minutes played. Osby ranked among Big 12 leaders in scoring (second), field goal percentage (fourth), rebounding (fifth), free throw percentage (fifth, .795) and blocked shots (11th, 0.84 blkpg.). Osby made 36 consecutive free throws, falling one shy of the school record.
During his junior campaign (2011-12), Osby appeared and started in all 31 games, averaging 12.9 ppg., 7.3 rpg., and 1.00 blkpg. in 30.2 minpg., while shooting .490 (147-300) from the floor. He led the Sooners in rebounding and double-doubles (seven). Osby was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection. He practiced with Oklahoma in 2010-11, but could not participate in games due to NCAA transfer rules.
Before transferring to Oklahoma, Osby spent his first two seasons at Mississippi State University. As a sophomore (2009-10), Osby played in 35 games (three starts), averaging 4.3 ppg. and 2.5 rpg. in 13.1 minpg. During his freshman year (2008-09), Osby appeared in 36 games, averaging 4.1 ppg. and 2.6 rpg. in 12.6 minpg.
