MJ - due to all the DPOY award

Kobe - so many 1st team defense

Pippen - helped the Bulls win 6 titles by shutting down the best player.

Lebron - by default.

LOL, it's possible. And RG is still my boy, but he has his trolling ways.

Meanwhile back at the sizzler:

MJ
Pippen
LeBrahn
Kobe / Wade

Would put Wade over Kobe though.

Help D > Man to man

Wade is actually a good man defender though but much superior than Kobe at help D. He just sucks at defending shooters because he overhelps and thats why Danny Green was shitting on him in the Finals

No. Their weakness off set each other, thus equal.

Maybe in today's NBA where you can't actually guard people, team defense is focused, then yes team defense is more important. Thus Kobe's decline from the elite defenders club. Him and his lack of effort on team defense, help, and rotations ...

Which explains why a lazy man defender but excellent weak side help defender Wade's ascension into the elite defenders club.

Modern NBA, where league rules strictly prohibit REAL man to man defense.

In reality, when you can actually PLAY the sport, and the rules aren't condusive and manipulated into making the game easier for exciting perimeter players to get to the basket and put up fantasy sports PPG numbers to draw in casuals and find the next MJ ...

Then man to man defense is ABSOLUTELY more important. Especially suffocating man defense, which Kobe is 2nd most capable of out of the five when motivated. See 2013 ASG, @ 34 years old ... locking up prime LeBron.

:oldlol:

Man Defense (Intimidation Factor):
1) MJ

2) Kobe (when motivated, if not he's #4)
3) Pippen
4) LeBron
5) Wade

Help Defense:
1) MJ
2) Pippen
3) Wade
4) LeBron
5) Kobe

Defensive Rotations:
1) LeBron
2) Pippen
3) MJ
4) Wade
5) Kobe

Shot Blocking:
1) LeBron
2) Pippen
3) MJ / Wade / Kobe

Defensive Instincts (steals):
1) MJ
2) Pippen
3) Kobe
4) Wade
5) LeBron

Defensive Versatility:
1) LeBron / Pippen
2) MJ
3) Kobe
4) Wade

His lack of effort comes from the fact that he doesn't play with Shaq anymore and he is now the #1 option instead of #2.

Help D is more important primarily because you can disrupt an entire team's flow (all 5 players) whereas man D you can only take out one player and even then you can never completely take him out. They'll always make tough/b.s shots here and there because there are plenty of instances where there is great defense but even better offense. All the great defenders of all-time like Russell, Jordan, Hakeem, Robinson, etc. have something in common and that is dominant help defense.

Basketball is played 5 on 5, not five 1 on 1 matchups.

Help D and rotational D go hand in hand too, so I'm not sure why you split them up.

Help defense is trapping another player in conjunction. Or doubling down on a big man, yet still being able to get back to your own man.

Rotation defense is an effort thing where you can disrupt another team by constantly moving, and following the ball. LeBron is the best of the bunch at this ... right there with Pippen. Their superior length plays apart of their success too. I feel the two are very different.

Obviously basketball isn't one on one. Back in the day before the psuedo zones, on the professional level there was more man to man. With team defense you can hide weak defenders. See EUROPEAN TEAMS

But spectacular man defense can actually be utilized on a team's quarterback or best player. Team defense is awesome in certain respects. But if you can put one of these lockdown man defenders on another team's best player, or fascilitator ... the guy who basically dictates how well a team will play, which of these guys will have the most success? You can obliterate a team's morale AND their chances to win.

MJ of all of them is the best mixture of team defense, and lockdown man defense. Thus one of the rare perimeter player DPOY awards.

In today's league, there are two to three stars on each team, at least contenders, so even if you had a defender take away one guy, they could easily just turn to the other star. It's 2 on 1 in this case. It's better to have a guy that could easily disrupt an entire team opposed to just their best player. It is why Lebron never really has a primary defensive assignment because he tries to disrupt an entire team's flow opposed to just taking away one guy unless all the team has is one guy (Knicks with Melo)

Rotational defense seems like helping out to me.

For example, Parker blows by Chalmers and gets to the paint, Bosh comes in to help and alter the shot (help defense). Lebron comes in to rotate and help on Duncan in case Parker passes the ball out to him or when he does pass the ball to him, Lebron ends up defending him. Helping the helper is what they call it, so I always assumed it was the same thing.

I gott'a ask, why do you put LeBron over Wade when Wade averages more blocks than he does? Wade also had more blks per game than LeBron ever had.

Same with Jordan. He actually had more lift and his help D helped him block shots more. Kobe never blocked that many shots as much as the players.
