Struggling to Understand Luke Walton

Okay, I get it, his team ranked worst in defense. No Byron Scott, no excuses, new beginning etc etc.
Last year, he talked about "eventually" teaching elaborate defensive schemes, that they need to learn the basic ones first before proceeding to level 2 and so forth.
He chose to retain Metta to help establish that work ethic and defensive culture.
Team Added Luol Deng and his 19 Mil/yr.
He benched the very expensive Mozgov bec of his defensive deficiencies.
He limited his most efficient scoreer Lou Williams 19 pts at only 24 mins/game.
This summer, Magic shipped a noted defensive slacker DLo Russell to complete house cleaning. No Mozgov, no D'Lo, no Lou Will.
Day 3 training camp Luke said he hasn't even install any offensive sets yet, leading me to believe he's focusing establishing his defensive schemes the whole time.
Right now, the team looks like a mess offensively. Most players esp Ingram,KCP and Clarkson are waiting for the ball, eager to show what they have by freelancing, dribbling 3-4 times to force in shots.
No fluidity, leading to multiple mistakes and confusion and of course EASY BASKETS by the opponent.:(
Noted defensive minds like Thibs and Mike Malone's team ALSO STRUGGLED with defense the past 2 years now. With the current system with much improved 3pt shooting, I think it's a huge mistake trying to stamp your imprint by creating elaborate defensive schemes.
I truly believe Golden State was best in defense not solely because of great schemes but because of their length,BB IQ, and athleticism.
Gary Payton complained that Phil Jackson didn't focus on preparing on defense when he was with the Lakers....At the end of the day, come playoff time, it's no longer about having the most smart defensive plans that wins it all but will and determination IMO.

Not installing offensive sets doesn't mean they are not focused on offense. He's probably trying to get guys play a certain way and develop automatic reactions to key situations, read defenses, develop cohesive movement... this is work you have to do with younger rosters before getting them to learn sets.

A certain way...like Ingram, Clarkson etc waiting in the perimeter to get the ball then force their way, dribbling 4-5 times to get bad shots?:confusedshrug:

Lakers lack overall bball IQ, athleticism, and talent

There's no coach on planet Earth who could make this team perform at an above average level. At least Luke is dedicated to not having the worst defense in the league :confusedshrug:

That's a plus imo

I don't think it's fair to judge by the way they play now. Also, while the roster has potential,if you judge by their current ability you can only assume they're going to struggle on offense. They're going to have to play with energy on defense, use their size, speed and athleticism, and get out on the open court. Any team as young as this is going to struggle on the half court. Who's their best shooter. KCP? Who else?

Not saying Luke is great but the guy hasn't been able to prove anything yet, that roster last year was utter shit.

How much better are the Miami heat players over these Lakers?:confusedshrug:
Whiteside had a horrible time finding a team that would sign him, same with James Johnson who was also terrible at Chicago and Toronto. Nobody wanted Waiters, Josh Richardson and Tyler Johnson were picked very late in the draft.
Ok 4 of those players I mentioned were veterans but the Lakers have Deng and KCP. JC, Nance, Randle are on their 3rd year...

You can be the best defensive coach of all time but your defense still sucks if you have a bunch of young kids who have zero experience on that end and who are not willing to put in the effort to get better.

D'Angelo Russell was absolute garbage on that end, he's unathletic and lacks leadership, he only cares about putting up points and being flashy on the offensive end, Ingram's a young man who's too thin for his position, Randle played out of shape last year and wore out quickly to a point where they had to limit his minutes on the court...

KCP I think will become a vocal leader on that end of the floor who will get guys to play smarter on the defensive side of the ball, Lonzo is an upgrade compared to Russ as well, at least he has length and he has the ability to get into passing lanes for steals much like Steph can.

Lakers don't have a Draymond Green or an Andre Iguodala, I don't care how good the coach is but if your team consists of aged vets and young kids you're not going to be able to compete with even the mediocre teams who at least have some kind of structure and identity.

This will be the first year for the Lakers where they have the right pieces when it comes to becoming a Playoffs contender, it takes chemistry and experience to get to where they need to be and hopefully we'll see flashes of it in this upcoming season.
