Chef pleads guilty to bilking Mavs' Terry
It's not unusual for people to try to bilk pro athletes out of money. It's a little odd when the crook is a cook.
Mavericks guard Jason Terry was robbed of $52,800 by his personal chef, who pleaded guilty to bank fraud by altering checks, according to court documents that were confirmed by team personnel.
Charles Devereaux, 37, admitted Monday in federal court in Sherman that he stole 21 checks, altered others and forged Terry's signature. Devereaux did household chores in addition to his cooking duties for Terry and his family, who are expecting their fourth child today.
The maximum sentence is 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. The incidents began in March, 2006, according to court papers.
