James

The Minnesota Timberwolves' willingness to make a four-year commitment to Mike James has landed them the best point guard still available on the free-agent market.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that James on Tuesday agreed to sign a four-year contract with the Wolves worth an estimated $25 million. Wednesday is the first day free agents can officially sign contracts.

James had narrowed his choice down to Minnesota, Dallas and Houston -- where he maintains an offseason home -- and indicated over the weekend that the Mavericks had a slight edge, largely because of his relationship with Mavs coach Avery Johnson and their recent trip to the NBA Finals.

But the Mavericks and Rockets, according to sources, wouldn't commit to more than a three-year offer to the 31-year-old.

Minnesota's four-year pitch and the chance to team with Kevin Garnett won it for the Wolves, who have injected their backcourt with plenty of scoring potential by signing James and acquiring rookie Randy Foye on draft night.

Signing James alleviates Minnesota's need to start Foye as a rookie. James would likely team with Ricky Davis as the Wolves' starters in the backcourt, with defensive stopper Trenton Hassell at small forward and Foye coming off the bench.

If Foye can make an immediate impact and James can approach his production from last season's breakout performance in Toronto -- 20.3 points and 5.8 assists per game, as well as 44.2 percent shooting from 3-point range -- Garnett figures to be pleased.

The Wolves have resisted all trade interest in Garnett, vowing to take one more stab at building around their 30-year-old franchise player by finding scorers to play off him.

Damnit I wanted to see KG traded. Looks like he's staying if they got Mike James to sign there.

kwajo 07-11-2006 06:14 PM

well Raps got nothing in return, I guess that's fine, at least we managed not to keep him :)

GoRapz 07-11-2006 06:16 PM

I wanna wish Mike James the best in the future. He's done alot for this team last season and hopefully, Minnesota will be his new and final home.

I would have liked to have gotten back Trenton Hassell but I guess it just wasn't possible or Colangelo preferred Parker from Europe. Either way, I am glad that he isn't coming back, he just is a horrible fit for our team, but he should fit in nicely as a sidekick to Kevin Garnett.

yes!

I can not explain how much I love Mike James now.

Now all we need is a center!

Skywalker 07-11-2006 06:18 PM

How perfect is this?

KG's knock is disapearing in the clutch. Mike James knock is shooting to much in the clutch.

Next move for Wolves:

Indiana gets

Marco Jaric

Minnesota gets

Stephen Jackson

Heretik32 07-11-2006 06:19 PM

Good fit, actually. He'll get his share of shots, and KG has proven time and again that he's not comfortable with the last shot.

wang4three 07-11-2006 06:20 PM

Eh...I can see this being Troy Hudson over again.

Skywalker 07-11-2006 06:21 PM

Troy had some good seasons in Minny. He hasn't been a complete disease.

Kujo 07-11-2006 06:21 PM

I had a feeling he would sign with the Wolves.

How long before KG starts criticizing James for taking ill advised shots down the stretch! lol!

thenextgreatbigman 07-11-2006 06:22 PM

jaric/griffin for magloire

Skywalker 07-11-2006 06:23 PM

two 20 ppg scorers.

a top 5 player in the league.

a shutdown perimter defender.

a great looking rookie who's ready to produce right now.

a bunch of overpayed bigs who don't play defense.

wow, I can definitely see this teams weakness.
