Hawks officially sign Speedy Claxton

Talk about him and Joe Johnson playing together, and what you think of Claxton

The Hawks are making good moves. I even like the drafting of Shelden Williams. I think they'll make a really big slpash in free agency next summer though.

I think he's a good 25MPG backup, but not the answer to the hawks problems at that position. Jamaal Tinsley or Andre Miller should be looked into and shipping off Tyrone Lue.

He will be the answer at PG and do just fine. JJ is very happy to have him from reading his comments in a yahoo article. This should allow JJ to be more effective. JJ shouldn't wear down as he did toward the end of last season. I hope JJ can get into that 23-25 ppg range this year. While maintaining a strong shoot %. One area I see improving is his 3 pt %.

I think he will do just fine with our up-tempo style of play, plus, I have always thought that he was one of the most underrated and unapreciated player...

That's a good pickup for you guys fills a huge hole.

Good signing for them. But they need to get something of value for harrington or else it will be another bad year. On a little side note anyone know what number Speedy might wear?

AtlHawks 07-13-2006 05:39 PM

This is just my guess. His shooting % will still be around 40-42% and still won't shoot the 3 well. I am looking for these numbers.

12-14 ppg
7-8 apg
1.5-2.0 spg
3 rpg
40-42% shooting

For Joe Johnson:

22-25 ppg
4-5 rpg
6-6.5 apg
45-47% shooting
38-42% 3pt shooting

I think Speedy and Joe Johnson finally give the Hawks a true, legit backcourt

I believe the addition of speedy will open up a lot of doors for JJ. He showed spurts of scoring greatness last year with a number of 40+ performances, but that was with the defense clamping down on him. This should make it a lot easier for JJ to get his shot and you will see his avg creep closer to the mid 20's while his assists will drop a bit. I also think Speedy is also gonna help guys like Salim and Josh C hit open jumpers on kickouts. The same goes for Smith and ZaZa getting easy dunks. It should be an exciting year!

These are very possible numbers for both players to achieve and very good ones if they do. I just think J-Smoove will help out the team alot.

Claxton has excelled vs. the other teams 2nd team PG.
That is why we gave him 24 million to start.
See it makes no sense, why would the Hawks sign a starter when they can get a career back-up instead.
