George Signed

2 years for 4.2 mil. Player option for the 2nd year.

mavsfan4zindagi 08-01-2006 04:34 PM

Good signing. Best 11/12th man in the league.

vagabond 08-01-2006 08:09 PM

the Mavs are beginning to look stupidly deep again. makes you wonder what Cuban can turn some of these "trading chips" into during the course of the season..

Silent Mav 08-01-2006 08:49 PM

Never hurts to have depth. It sure came in handy last year over the course of the season. Plus it keeps the Suns from getting him. As a Mavs fan, that's not a bad thing.

Devean George..

He will be the Walter McCrappy of the Mavs next year. Watch
him contribute 3 points, 2 boards and 1 assist a game next year
while shooting 25 % from behind the arc and 35% from the field.:hammerhead: :banghead:

I think I see George as more of a 9th/10th man than 11th or 12th...he has to be at least ahead of A.J. and Ager...Although Ager and George might compete for the extra minutes, but since Ager is still a rook, I see George getting most of that time.

This is how I see the roster.

PG - Terry/Harris/Johnson
SG - Buckner/Stackhouse/Ager
SF - Howard/George-Ager
PF - Nowitzki/Croshere
C - Diop/Dampier

13 - 14 - 15 - Mbenga/???/???

I noticed a lot of people have Devin and JT starting, but I don't think we got Buckner to come off the bench. Last year, we brought in Doug Christie (who knows why?), then Griffin to be the starting SG, but since he doesn't have an outside shot, we upgraded with Buckner. George could chip in here and there if Josh gets into foul trouble because of his aggressive D, but this signing just gives us at least some backup help for Josh.

i think its a good move for the mavs even if they end up using him for a trade or something....

TEXAS BATMAN 08-02-2006 08:29 PM

I like the signing because;

1) It adds depth at the 2/3 position.

2) Gives us a big guard that can shoot defend and rebound.

3) Makes us, I quote, "ridiculously deep."

He's not a marquee free agent but he is a pretty good vet with playoff and high pressure situation experience. His game reminds me a lot of Josh's, and though probably not as consistent he's pretty much a Shane Battier type player. He'll sometimes give you a couple of quality minutes during a game, and you might even squeeze a couple of good games out of him. Plus you know he's not going to b!t@h and complain about minutes or touches given he's a career role player.

Devean fits any piece to a team's puzzle if they're trying to add depth to the roster and fill some holes. Plus he won't mess with chemistry since he's a versatile big guard/small forward. So a good signing by Dallas all around.

I agree with you but for number 2, dont we have Greg Buckner for that.
Well, anyway here's how i see the Mavs depth chart (free agents and all).

PG Jason Terry, Devin Harris, Anthony Johnson
SG Greg Buckner, Devean George, Maurice Ager
SF Josh Howard, Jerry Stackhouse,
PF Dirk Nowitzki, Austin Croshere, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Keith Van Horn (FA)
C DeSagana Diop, Erick Dampier, Didier Iiunga-Mbenga, Pavel Podkolzin

Now about Pops, its been rumored that the mavs will sign him to a one year deal assuming physical are passed. Pavel has a 50% chance of getting cut for a sign-and-deal trade involving Keith Van Horn. That's what I heard.

Silent Mav 08-02-2006 09:52 PM

Yeah, Pops supposedly is a done deal pending physical. A rumbling about letting Pavel go play in Europe. The thing with a sign and trade for KVH is the luxury tax. Mavs as they are right now with Pops will pay almost 4 mil in luxury tax. So anything they do in a trade with KVH will add to that. Is Cuban really willing to pay more tax?

I sure hope so. If Pavel is indeed cut or sent to Europe, I'd like to see Cuban get something out of KVH.

But I'm not sure we can send Pavel to Europe and still retain his rights, so I'm guessing they just keep him and round out the 15 with Pops.

Z, i'm inclined to agree with you on this. Unless they can get something they want out of KVH.

soog 08-03-2006 09:37 AM

still a few good pf's on the market (Evans, Gooden, KMart - martin's still there despite what karl said). We would retain Pavel's rights if he went to europe. I'd love to either do a S&T with KVH for gooden or kmart, or if we got kvh for a 2m contract, I wouldn't mind that either. He played solid all year till he broke his hand at the end.

No we would not. If he goes to Europe, he'll no longer be a Mav.

soog 08-03-2006 05:23 PM

i was under the impression that he would go to europe and play for whatever team, but it would be as if we drafted him and left him in europe like we did initially, where we still retain the rights to him should he ever decide to come back.
