Just get rid of guns. Simple. Where are all the people with guns protecting themselves? They aren't. There are no heroes with guns practicing this self defence. Get rid of them, make them harder to get, and it will positively impact society.

Australia does not have the biggest weapon manufacturing industry, crazy agencies like CIA who are in the business arming anybody who could further their interests at some point. Add to that the "what goes around, comes around" effect of the said policies and years smuggling firearms to Mexico to be sold to drug cartels. A lot of these guns are coming back from Mexico and South America, it is not like people go and buy unregistered automatic rifles from the store.

I agree with you that there are just too many guns in the US and they are easy to obtain, however, it's not as easy as taking people's guns or making access more difficult. As long as the enormous weapon industry exists it's going to be easy to get them.
