Default Nebraska coaching search continues

"While Nebraska officials continue their search for a new basketball coach, one of the reported candidates -- South Alabama head coach John Pelphrey -- says he has received no phone calls or messages from anyone with the school. "I have not been contacted by Nebraska," Pelphrey told the Press-Register on Sunday afternoon after returning from vacation. "My focus is on our team and our players here at South Alabama and our upcoming season." Mobile Register

"The fact Pelphrey hasn't been contacted by Nebraska officials is a bit strange. Nebraska athletics director Steve Pederson phoned South Alabama AD Joe Gottfried on Thursday and asked for permission to speak to Pelphrey about the Cornhuskers' opening. Gottfried granted that request. But Sunday afternoon, Pelphrey said he has not been contacted by anyone from Nebraska." Mobile Register

"Nevada head coach Mark Fox, considered by some as the Cornhuskers' top candidate, withdrew his name from consideration on Saturday, choosing to stay at Nevada where he has four starters returning from a successful team and is expected to be a top-25 pick this season. Also, Fox's wife, Cindy, is an assistant athletics director at Nevada." Mobile Register
