Re: Bill Simmons on "The Karate Kid"
I agree with Simmons when he says that one thing that made the original so great was the creation of so many memorable characters. The characterization was so stellar that anyone who is thinking of writing a screenplay should watch this movie.
PS - there was a mystique surrounding martial arts in the early/mid 80's, and that added to the coolness factor of these movies - well, at least the first 2. By the time part 3 came out in '89, the cultural 80's were over and martial arts had lost some of this mystique, and that added to it being one of the greatest unintentional comedies of all time.
