It wouldn't matter if we came close to winning it all. The Nets did the exact same thing with Deron, and while they only have 1 year to prove to him that he should stay it's not the worst situation to be in. Howard doesn't have a no-movement clause, so ultimately it is up to Smith's discretion as to where he goes.
My concern would be accumulating the talent, and once you have enough talent surrounding each other it becomes easier to convince them to stay.
Remember that Garnett didn't want to play in Boston, originally, but a ring changes everything.
