I'm rewatching the series with my mother now. It's not really her type of thing, and frankly the large scale is an issue at times, but she was pretty well caught up when they threw Bran out the window.
And the books I just loaned to my Uncle Bob. He's a retired fireman and was a vietnam POW. He's a voracious reader, but generally history, particularly biographies. But his grandaughter got him into Harry Potter, and he loved it, and then someone talked him into reading Twighlight, then the Mockingjay, so I told him if he was that willing to read fantasy now, he should give these a shot.
