DANNY I POWERS SAN MIGUEL TO 5TH CONSECUTIVE WIN
Red Bull drops to 4th; Villanueva follows RP-SMC 5 to Iran
Saturday, 12 May 2007
CEBU – Danny Ildefonso gate-crashed and spoiled Red Bull’s sendoff party for FIBA-Asia Champions Cup-bound Enrico Villanueva Saturday night here.
Ildefonso frolicked in the fourth quarter and fuelled San Miguel Beer’s decisive charge en route to a 98-93 spanking of Red Bull in a 2007 Talk N Text PBA Fiesta Conference road game at the New Cebu City Coliseum.
Ildefonso and the Beermen outmaneuvered Red Bull at crunch time, sustaining their searing run to draw closer to the teams in the upper half of the chart.
The Beermen shrugged off a listless start, fought the Barakos toe-to-toe in the two middle quarters before picking up the momentum in the final period to stretch their streak to five games.
Keeping their hot run going, the Beermen, now at 6-7, drew within a game of the fifth running Talk N Text (7-6).
Red Bull, notwithstanding James Penny’s 30-point explosion, slid to fourth place at 9-5.
It was a sorry loss for the Bulls, who were hoping to jack up their record as they’re to lose the services of Villanueva in their next game. Right after their game versus San Miguel, Villanueva left for Manila to catch the 12:20 a.m. Air Emirates flight for Dubai en route to joining the RP team in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Tehran, Iran.
Villanueva scored six points in the contest.
Ildefonso personally spoiled Red Bull’s sendoff party for Villanueva as he sizzled in the fourth quarter, carrying the Beermen to the five-point win.
The two-time MVP winner scattered 11 of his 20 points in the payoff period.
The two teams ended the first half tied at 48-all with Red Bull taking control in the opening quarter and San Miguel making a wild chase in the second period.
The Barakos closed out the opening canto with an 11-to-nothing run while the Beermen drew level with an 11-2 attack to end the second quarter.
Olsen Racela fired two triples and totaled 12 points in the second period with Dorian Pena adding 11. (NC)
