Because the Knicks are a "premiere franchise" in the "best city in the world." Even when they suck, they get a lot of coverage, similar to the Jets. The media holds NY teams to high standards. They must be like the Yankees and win 27 titles, or the Giants and keep winning SBs.
The Knicks however have been a mediocre franchise for quite a while, and when the team struggles, it's an easy story for the media. Plus the fans have a reputation of being obnoxious and overrating their team. I get more negs from Knick fans on here than anyone combined.
The Nets, on the other hand, played in the smaller New Jersey. They don't have a lot to look back on. It's basically a new franchise in Brooklyn. Even though they play in NY as well, the Knick's failures and success will always overshadow them.
Plus IDK about you, but I really don't know any Net fans.
