Default Phoenix Suns 2013 NBA Draft

The Phoenix Suns tonight added University of Kentucky guard Archie Goodwin and University of Missouri forward Alex Oriakhi (oar-ee-AH-key) in the 2013 NBA Draft. The Suns acquired Goodwin’s draft rights (29th overall selection) and guard Malcolm Lee from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for the 30th pick. Phoenix selected Oriakhi with the 57th overall pick (second round) in the draft.

A 6-foot-5, 189-pound guard, Goodwin played one season at the University of Kentucky after a highly-decorated high school career. Just 18 years old, Goodwin was the Wildcats’ leading scorer in his lone collegiate campaign, averaging 14.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.1 steals en route to Freshman All-SEC honors. His 466 total points were the 10th-most ever scored by a Kentucky freshman and ranked 11th in the conference in 2012-13.

Quick off the dribble and adept at getting into the lane, Goodwin earned an SEC-best 212 free throw attempts, becoming just the ninth freshman in school history to sink 100 or more free tosses in a single season (135).

Oriakhi was a four-year collegiate performer at the University of Connecticut (2009-12) and the University of Missouri (2012-13) who won an NCAA title with UConn in 2011. After transferring and playing his senior season at Missouri, was selected Honorable Mention All-SEC after averaging a career-high 11.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 2012-13.

A 6-foot-9, 255-pound, physical forward, Oriakhi shot 63.9 percent from the field as a senior, converted at least two-thirds of his shots in 18 appearances and 80 percent or better in nine, including six perfect shooting performances overall. He recorded 11 double-doubles and 15 double-digit rebounding games, eight of which included at least five offensive boards.
